Bottle Heating Policy

Bridge Kids Childcare does not provide baby formula. All bottles should come to the crèche readymade and bottles should be clearly labelled – This is a requirement of the TUSLA. Milk, juice and food will always be placed in the refrigerator in the baby room fridge.

Instructions for heating babies’ bottles;

It is important to heat the bottles of formula safely. Formula milk (like breast milk) only needs to be at body temperature (or lukewarm). The most common way that we will heat bottles is by placing them in a jug, of warm to hot water. The water does not need to be boiling; hot water out of the tap is fine. Heating usually only takes a few minutes and no more than 10 minutes. The heated milk needs to be used within 1 hour of heating (as bacteria can multiply in warmed milk).


  1. Warm a bottle of either formula or defrosted breast milk by submerging it in a jug of warm (not boiling) water, by running the bottle under warm tap water, or by using a commercial bottle warmer.

  2. Test the temperature of the milk or formula in the bottle by shaking a few drops onto your inner wrist. It should feel tepid, not hot. Continue warming the milk or formula until it's the desired temperature.

  3. For baby's safety, we never reuse formula or breast milk once we have heated it as bacteria may have formed in the liquid.

We do not microwave bottles. The microwaving can change the nutritional composition of the milk (particularly proteins) and make it an inadequate source of nutrition for your baby. The milk also heats unevenly and can burn your baby's mouth.


Nappy Changing Policy

The purpose of the nappy changing policy is to ensure that nappies are changed in a safe and hygienic manner. At Bridge Kids controls are put into place to minimize the risk of spreading of germs and ensure appropriate removal of waste daily.

Nappy changing facilities are provided in the Farm and Rainbow Rooms, our Under the Sea room and the Rainforest room. These rooms are equipped with plastic gloves and aprons for the staff so that they can use a fresh pair of gloves and apron for every nappy change in addition to the provision of appropriate cleaning materials.

Each child has a cubby which holds their own nappies, wipes/cotton wool and barrier creams such as Vaseline or Sudocream. There is no cross use of any of the creams, in the event that a spare nappy is borrowed it is documented on a chart and a replacement is given as soon as it is available.

Parents are notified in advance to say that supplies are running low. Parents are asked to replace or replenish these supplies as quickly as possible.

A record of all nappy changes are kept on a daily basis for each child and the changes are documented in the app –little vista. A paper copy is stored in Bridge Kids. Children’s nappies are checked on arrival and changes/checks take place every 2 hours or sooner if needed.

At every change the child is placed on the safety changing mat. Staff members must ensure all supplies are ready and available within reach during the nappy change. One hand must be left on the baby/child at all times to ensure child safety. A baby / child must never be left unattended on a changing mat.

After every change the staff member wipes down the area with sanitizer and returns the sanitizer to a high shelf out of children’s reach. All staff members must wash their hands before and after each nappy change. Staff members designated to nappy changes must not be involved in the preparation of food.

Nappies must be disposed of in the Sanitation nappy bins provided. At the end of each day these bins are emptied into the main bins located externally.

The following outlines the step by step process for changing a nappy to ensure hygiene standards are maintained and aids the prevention of spreading of infections and diseases;

Babies


  1. Wash Hands

  2. Remove or cover jewellery and roll up sleeves above the elbows.

  3. Put on disposable plastic apron and gloves (staff must repeat this step for each nappy change)

  4. Remove nappy & clean baby and ensure baby is dried gently and thoroughly.

  5. Discard nappy in nappy bin

  6. Change gloves again to avoid contaminating creams or clean nappy. Put on clean nappy. (Never leave the infant unattended on the nappy change unit).

  7. Lift baby and return them to the main room.

  8. Clean down area with sanitiser – this is not to be done with the baby still in the room.

  9. Dispose of gloves / apron / wash hands prior to leaving nappy area

  10. Wash your hands in nappy changing room and return to main room.

Toddlers and up

  1. Wash Hands

  2. Remove or cover jewellery and roll up sleeves above the elbows

  3. Put on disposable plastic apron and gloves. (staff must repeat this step for each nappy change)

  4. Remove nappy & clean child and ensure child is dried gently and thoroughly.

  5. Discard nappy in nappy bin

  6. Change gloves again to avoid contaminating creams or clean nappy. Put on clean nappy. (Never leave the infant unattended on the nappy change unit).

  7. Lift child and bring to children’s sink for supervised hand-washing.

  8. Clean down nappy area with sanitiser.

  9. Dispose of gloves / apron / wash hands prior to leaving nappy area

  10. Return to room

Cleaning Soiled Clothes

  1. Put on disposable plastic apron and gloves.
  2. Flush any solids into the toilet – do not rinse soiled laundry in the sink as this can spread infections.


  3. Put into a nappy bag and tie up / seal whilst transferring directly to the laundry room.

  4. Rinse out with hot water from the sluice sink, place clothes in bag and sterilise sink after use.

  5. Re-wash hands.

Cleaning toilet areas.

Toilet areas must be cleaned frequently during the day in accordance with the cleaning schedule. Check for supplies of tissues and soaps, ensure toilets are flushed and area is clean and sanitised.

When cleaning toilets, particular attention should be paid to toilet seats, toilet handles, door handles, and wash hand basins, especially taps.

If children use potty’s, ensure they are emptied carefully in the toilet and cleaned with hot water and detergent, wiped over with a disinfectant and dried thoroughly. Ideally each child should be assigned their own potty.
