A Journey Through American Music: Travelling Blues
Sunday, 19 April 2009
Morgan Freeman continues his showcase of the development of American blues music, taking up the story with the 1960s musicians from across the world who blended and melded it with thumping electric rock to produce new sounds.
The British blues boom saw white musicians like Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton take up the blues baton to move it to a new level.
Where blues began as a soulful message of what was happening in a musician's life, as electric and then digitised music developed, it became entertainment. Blues and hip-hop married to produce the street sound for the new generation of black and whites in urban America.
This modern soundtrack in turn connects blacks back to their African heritage.

ABC2 Live presents Firebird and other legends

Live AEST

Wednesday, 22 April 2009

A celebration of three timeless ballets - Firebird, Petrouchka, and Les Sylphides – performed by The Australian Ballet at the Sydney Opera House and broadcast live (AEST) on ABC2.

Hosted by Jennifer Byrne and Chris Taylor,
Firebird and other legends features choreographer, Graeme Murphy’s brand-new interpretation of Firebird, plus two of Mikhail Fokine’s best-known works, the sublime Les Sylphides and the vibrant ballet classic Petrouchka.
During interval we cross live to all the excitement behind the scenes at the ballet. Dancers and artistic staff will share their insights into the work that goes into staging such a large scale production.
The three ballets:
Firebird: Graeme Murphy’s critically acclaimed Firebird is inspired by Mikhail Fokine’s masterful interpretation of an old Russian folktale from 1910. This world-premiere ballet explores the story of a magical bird that bestows wishes and curses in equal measure. Sergei Diaghilev commissioned a 28-year-old Stravinsky to create the score, making the composer a star overnight.

Petrouchka: Another great Fokine/Stravinsky collaboration set against the colourful backdrop of a village fair, Petrouchka follows the foibles and flirtations of a group of puppets who come to life. Stravinsky’s score imbues the puppets with great depth of feeling, especially poor Petrouchka, in love with a ballerina-doll who rejects his affections.

Les Sylphides: The ethereal beauty of Fokine’s choreography combined with the dreamy nocturnes of Chopin’s music has established Les Sylphides as one of the most famous and popular of all Romantic ballets. Set in a moonlight-flooded glade, the enchanting sylphs, partnered by a lone poet, make for a ballet that’s both otherworldly while sublimely human.

Peep Show: Conference
The multi award-winning and critically-acclaimed hit comedy starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb continues its new fourth series.

At the annual JLB conference in Kettering, Mark's (Mitchell) boss, Johnson (Paterson Joseph), tells Mark he has to give a presentation in front of the entire board. If it goes well, Mark gets a promotion. If it fails, it's instant demotion.

Johnson takes a shine to Big Suze (Sophie Winkleman), making Jeremy (Webb) an indecent proposal of 530 pounds to let him sleep with his girlfriend. Jeremy can't believe it but of course accepts. Big Suze is horrified and immediately dumps Jeremy, who is distraught when she starts going out with Johnson.
Back in Kettering, Mark's preparation for his presentation is going terribly. He is totally stressed out and has systematically abused all his workmates. To make matters worse, Johnson invites him out to a strip club, where Mark gets into an argument with a stripper.
