Before The Avengers, the Hulk hasn’t exactly had a worthy interpretation on the big screen. There’s been the Ang Lee-directed Hulk in 2003 and the Edward Norton-starring The Incredible Hulk in 2008 that led into The Avengers, but it really wasn’t until Joss Whedon wrote and directed a Hulk played by Mark Ruffalo that really nailed a Hulk we could care to watch.
Coming off from the The Avengers one could only wonder: When are we going to get our solo Mark Ruffalo-as-Hulk adventures? The answer is: Not any time soon.
That doesn’t however mean it’s not going to happen, as MTV spoke to Marvel producer Kevin Feige on this very topic. Feige said “I don't think there's a lot that we couldn't do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe.” Feige then went on to add that he thinks “'Planet Hulk' is a cool story, ‘World War Hulk’ is a cool story.”
Which would be rather interesting directions to go in for the Hulk. Those two stories in the comics involved other Marvel heroes sending the Hulk into space after some things that he did, ultimately leading to the Hulk becoming the leader of another planet before coming back to Earth for revenge.
Upon further elaboration on speculative plans to do with a Hulk movie, Feige said “Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in 'Avengers'? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until 'Avengers 2’, so there's a lot of time to think about it."
This shows that inevitably the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to enter phase three in the lead up to the inevitable The Avengers 3, and with the ideas of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk floating around, it could be possible that The Avengers 2 could build up to this.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding it’s not impossible for the Hulk to do something worthy of shooting him into space for the perceived good of Earth by the end of The Avengers 2, only for the Hulk to then rise up and become the emperor of a planet in a solo film, returning for revenge in The Avengers 3. Of course, that’s purely speculation on a way of using those storylines across movies, but it could possibly work.
What would be nice to think on is if the Hulk is to get a solo film after The Avengers 2 it would only be right to give Black Widow and Hawkeye movies too, especially as S.H.I.E.L.D. are getting an entire television show.
But what do you think? Would Planet Hulk and World War Hulk work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Are there any other Hulk storylines that would fit in this world quite nicely?
