Plaza Theatre

1910–____

Original address: 410–412 William Street, nw cor Monroe

Current equivalent address: 510–512 William Street.

ARCHITECT: Henry L. Spann

MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT:

NOTE: Not listed in Proceedings of the Common Council, 1907–1918. Part of the RKO vaudeville circuit. Later became a black movie house. Demolished in August 1975.

MYSTERY: The Sanborn map indicates that the auditorium ran parallel to Monroe Street. A later source maintains that the auditorium ran parallel to William Street. Two cards in the downtown library Special Collections card catalogue indicate that the Plaza was built in 1918, not 1910. Yet the Plaza appears in the 1914 Sanborn map. Was the theatre entirely rebuilt in 1918?

CURRENT STATUS: Gone. New houses now stand in its place.
