German-speaking SeaCity Tour Guides
Role: Delivering short tours of SeaCity’s Southampton’s Titanic Story exhibition to German cruise ship passengers (on fixed days). This is a seasonal role open during Spring-early Autumn.
Responsible to: Rebecca White (Volunteer Co-ordinator)
Location: SeaCity Museum
Hours: To coincide with days when the museum offers a free bus shuttle-service between the cruise terminal and SeaCity. Normally two tours take place: at 10.45 and 11.15, however this can be discussed.
Timescale: There are no deadlines for this role. Registration will stay open until all available roles have been filled.
1. Purpose of role:

SeaCity has developed an ongoing partnership with a German cruise company offering a shuttle service between the ship and the museum. We are looking for a fluent German speaker with an interest in history to help us develop our offer by leading mini-tours of SeaCity’s Titanic exhibition. Volunteers will be required to attend training sessions and be willing to develop their own tours as well as using existing scripts that are available.

This is a fantastic opportunity for those who would like to gain experience in tour-guiding and wants to help support the work of the museums in a very clear way.
2. Specific tasks:

  • Liaise with Front of House staff to make them aware that you will be delivering tours.
  • Deliver a tour of the Southampton’s Titanic Story exhibition in German.

  • Be willing to undertake training in competent tour-guiding and the history associated with the exhibition.

3. General role:

  • To act as a representative and ambassador for Arts and Heritage

  • To promote the health and safety of visitors, staff and volunteers by following designated procedures

  • To work within the Volunteer Guidelines and related organisational policies (ie. Child Protection; Grievance &

Disciplinary; Equalities; Access)
4. Relevant qualities:

  • Enthusiastic attitude

  • Fluent in German

  • Reliable and flexible

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly in spoken English and German.

  • Confident in public speaking and delivery.

  • Experience of working with members of the public is helpful but not essential.

  • An interest in history (and the Titanic).

5. DBS Check:

The successful applicant may require a DBS check for this role.
