Aetshetics

Prospected result:

Competence in main periods of the Byzantine aesthetics. Understanding of the connection between the Canon, dogmatic and Christian art in the Eastern Orthodoxy.



Course annotation:

Crucial topics of the Byzantine aesthetics are covered: the concept of Beauty and Triune God, Aesthetics and beauty, Imago Dei and created world. Relations between the visible (incarnated, manifested) and invisible (spirit); the world as the “Mirror” of God and Mankind in their corporate existence (the concept of ordos) are analyzed. Organization of the sacred space in Byzantine thought: semantics of the form and functional motifs. The influence of Church fathers Pseudo-Aeropagitus, John the Damascene, Theodore Studitus and the Seven Ecumenical councils on aesthetics in the Church and Liturgy. The meaning of the Canon in the religious (Christian) art and sacral art in the servitude to theology.

Course annotation:

The goal of the course is to improve previously acquired general language skills for better perception and presentation of professional texts in English. Professional terminology is analyzed and trained in practical use. The following fields of theological knowledge are covered in the course: Biblical language; Ecclesiastical terminology; Liturgy, Art, Iconography and Architecture; Church agenda and calendar; Dogmatics.

Students are involved in text making and presentation during the whole course.

Prospected result:

Main paradigms of the koine Greek besides basic knowledge of the language will be acquired securing the ability to read and translate the text of the New Testament.



Course annotation:

Knowledge of the vocabulary, grammar and syntax of the koine Greek language is necessary for understanding and exegetical studies of the New Testament and Church fathers. Studies of structure of the language go along with reading of excerpts of most important texts.

Prospected result:

Students will be trained in realistic drawing of different techniques. Good drawing skills are integral part of painting, Iconography and graphics.



Course annotation:

The goal of the course is based in conviction that drawing the foundation for academic education in art and essential precondition for understanding of the language of visual art. The course covers 4 years of studies, starting from the 1st year and it is related to other disciplines. Long terms tasks raise from short term sketches.

Various techniques of drawing are used in the course – pencils, ink, “dry brush”, sanguine, sepia etc.

1st year of studies covers drawing of geometrical figures, ornaments and part of human body (hand, head etc.); still life and shading. Copies of venerated masterpieces. 2nd year covers more difficult drawing s of skull, head of a living person, dressed figure. The 3rd year takes the course into contact with other disciplines – hangings, portrait with hands, sitting person, interior. The 4th year requires drawings of hands, legs, naked figure, and two figures.

Prospected result:

Mastering basics of oil painting and other techniques reaching professional level in their skills. Students analyze tonal relations, colors and reflections, peculiarities of forms, composition and personal taste.



Course annotation:

The ultimate goal of the course is to shape respectful attitude towards the instrument of expression given by God to man. The course on Painting covers 4 years (8 semesters) and the difficulty of tasks raises consequently – from Still life to Portrait and human figures (one – several). The course serves as the supportive discipline for the Icon painting course. Also the history of art is integrated in the course from the professional perspective of composition.

Prospected result:

Understanding of diverse means of expression in composition, competence in basic of composition – proportions, rhythm, form, light/shade, color, harmony, contrast etc. Students are motivated to use their competence in drawings, paintings and graphics, starting from the simplest and reaching the most complex organisms serving the revelation of the idea of the artwork.




Course annotation:

Analysis of masterpieces is provided by making copies. The course covers 4 years of studies and offers training of professional skills along with development of taste and world outlook by the use of the image. The 1st year: basic principles of composition, analysis of masterpieces. Proportions, format, colors. 2nd year connects composition with painting: portrait. 3rd year: human figure; students are sketching compositions of many figures, learning from both Western traditions and Icon samples. The organization of composition – center, background, compositional schema, symmetry and asymmetry, light as a means of composition, plane and volume. Interior of the Church and position of Altar. 4th year: painting of several human figures, changing means of expression; the best version is elaborated in details. The work on diploma sketches started.

Conviction that the plastic anatomy dealing with forms and proportion of the human body, their changes in motion and peace is very significant means for realization of creative ideas for every artist.



Course annotation:

The course provides basic knowledge and trains professional skills to apply the knowledge in other courses and practice. History of anatomy, key terms and knowledge about bones (joints, axis, chest, skull, legs&hands etc.) is provided along with knowledge about muscles (torso, neck, face, members).

Students acquire basic know-how of the PC and internet, strengthen and deepen the knowledge acquired previously in the middle school. They get knowledge about the computer graphics and the use of widespread software (Photo Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw) and scanning of both texts and pictures&slides. They use IBM computers.



Course annotation:

5 topics are covered by the course: 1)formation and construction of PC; operating system MS, 2)MS WORD for text editing, tools for formatting and drawing, works with tables, 3)basic of computer graphics – picture formats, color palettes, work with scanner, PAINT, 4) COREL DRAW and ADOBE PHOTOSHOP. Printing of results.

Basic knowledge about the restoration of artworks, skills to apply the knowledge in practical work.



Course annotation:

Differences between the sacral artwork and any other kind of art (materials, technologies, preservation and use) are analyzed in the course. Basic materials, their chemical and physical characteristics. Agents causing ageing (improper storing, quality of materials, temperature and humidity, biological agents etc.). Restoration of artworks – basic principles, research of condition and technologies used. Rules for storing of the sacral artwork. The Passport of the restoration of the artwork. Regulations of the State institutions regarding preservation of artworks. Conserving and transporting of artworks.

Prospected result:

Skills of icon painting - from the revelation, further to Canon and final implementation. Students acquire variety of materials and technological means corresponding to the vision of the painter and will know how to use them. They get the necessary basis for further professional work – the concept and meaning of the Icon as story, ways to depict it, they will be able to recognize and analyze most outstanding schools of Icon painting and “language” used. After successful graduation form the course students will be able to make professional copy of canonical icons or create their own Icon painting.


Course annotation:

The following topics are covered: Ornament and text (letters) – the meaning of text and its place in Iconography. Harmony between the line and color; line as expression of the rational, whereas color – emotional side of creativity. Symbolical meaning of colors and their psychological effect. Nature in Icon – stylization. Clothing and hanging. Painting of the body and face. Meaning of light in Icons.

Materials used for Icon painting, preparation of the background (wood). Gold layer and its application.

Course annotation:

Studying historical structure of fonts and aesthetics of letters students obtain skills for intelligent icon painting. The course stops on Old Slavonic letters poluustav (13-18 cent.), letters used in icons (13-18 cent.), uncial letters, calligraphy (vignettes), initials and abbreviations used as ornament.

Prospected result:

Knowledge about origins of icon in the Gospel and sacred Tradition of the Church. Students will be able to analyze theology of icon from the perspective of the Eastern Greek Orthodoxy – Orthodox Dogmatics and Liturgy.



Course annotation:

Students will acquire knowledge about typology of Icons as means for better orientation in the field: Iconographies of Trinity, Mother of God and Angels. Christological events in Icon painting reveal close connection of the Icon painting with the text of the Gospel. The concept of the “Light of Tabor” in Icon painting. Events of the Church and the so-called “life stories” of saints in Iconography. Iconostasis in the Church – its meaning and position before the Altar, key elements of Iconostasis. Cross and the meaning of Cross in Orthodox liturgy.

Attitude to Icons in the West – opinions and their analysis. The use of Icons in Eastern worship.
