Listen to the story about three men and answer the questions below.

  1. Where were three men spending their holidays?

  2. What floor did they live in a hotel?

  3. What sad story did Tom tell his friends?

Script

Three men were spending their holiday in New York. They were living in a hotel which had forty-five floors and their room was on the last floor.

Returning to the hotel late one night, they were told by the lift man: "I am very sorry, but the lifts in our hotel aren't running. They stop working at twelve o'clock. You must walk up to your room.”

"We are still young," one of the men said. "I suppose we can climb up to the forty-fifth floor." So the men took off their coats and put them in the coat-room. As they were walking past the tenth floor one of the men said, "I am becoming a little tired. I have an idea how lo make the climb easier. I shall tell happy or funny stories the next five floors then Bill will sing songs the next fifteen floors, and Tom will tell sad stories the last fifteen floors."

They continued climbing, and the first man told happy stories and jokes and the second sang happy songs. When they arrived at the thirtieth floor, the first man said: "Now, Tom, you can begin telling sad stories."

"Yes," Tom said, "I must tell you a very sad story. The key to our room is lying in my coat pocket, in the coat-room on the ground floor!"

Listen to the story about Mr. Bell’s trick and answer the questions below.

  1. Where did the shopkeepers put their money on Friday evening?

  2. What happened to the night safe?

  3. Why did the shopkeepers put the money not into the night safe but into Mr. Bell’s box?

Script

It was Friday evening and shopkeepers in Grimsby came to the bank to put their money into the night safe. But later that evening the night safe disappeared and with it £4,000.

Every Friday evening the shopkeepers put the money they take during the week into the night safe. They don't want to leave it in their shops, but the bank closes early. The night safe is outside on the wall and the money they put into it goes into the bank. But on this Friday evening the people dropped them not into a night safe, but into a box that belonged to Mr. Michael Bell.

Mr. Bell, who makes radios and televisions, had the idea when he saw two men outside the bank one evening. When he came home from work, the two men, who were shopkeepers, were putting some money into the night safe. He made the box at home and painted it. When it was ready, he took it to the bank and hung it on the wall next to the night safe.

On the front of the night safe he painted the words: "Please use the new night safe. This one is out of order." Then he went round the corner and waited for the shopkeepers to arrive. He listened while they dropped their bags of money into the box. When it was full, he quickly took it down and went home with £4,000.

Mr. Bell is very clever and his idea was good, but not perfect. Now he has time to think of other ideas. He's in prison for stealing.

Listen to the story about an absent-minded writer and answer the questions below.

  1. Why did he begin writing in the train?

  2. Did the conductor believe that the writer had got a ticket somewhere in his pockets?

  3. Why was the writer looking for his ticket so persistently?

Script

A well-known author, who always insisted that a writer's success depended on his remembering facts and events, was once riding in a train. He did not like talking to people he didn't know, so he took paper and a pencil out of his bag and was soon busy writing a plan for his next book. He was interrupted by the conductor asking for his ticket, and he began looking for it in the pockets of his jacket and trousers, in his bag, even in his hat. But he failed to find the ticket anywhere, and he felt more uncomfortable every moment.

The conductor recognized the writer and waited patiently. At last he said, "I suppose you have put the ticket somewhere in your bag. Don't hurry. I'll come back for it when we get to the next station.”

But when they arrived at the next station, he writer was still looking for his ticket. When the conductor appeared, he looked up and began to defend himself. "I clearly remember buying a ticket," he insisted. "I simply can't imagine what has happened to it."

“Don't worry about it," the conductor repeated. "I suppose you have the ticket somewhere. I don't suppose a man in your position needs to save money by travelling without a ticket. Forget it."

"No, no!" the writer insisted. "There is a special reason why I can't forget it! The fact is, without the ticket I can't remember where I am going!"

Listen to the story about a rich old lady and answer the questions below.

  1. Who lived with her in the hotel?

  2. In what way did the young waiter help the lady?

  3. Why did he want to be helpful?

Script

There was once a very rich old lady whose husband had died, and whose children had married and gone to live in foreign countries. When she reached the age of eighty and was too old to live alone and look after a house herself, this rich old lady went to live in an expensive and very comfortable hotel near the sea.

This rich old lady had a pair of nasty dogs, which used to growl and bark at everybody. But she loved them very much. They lived in the hotel with her and went wherever she did.

After the old lady and her dogs had been at the hotel for nearly a year, a new young waiter came to work there and began to do everything that he could to help the old lady and be nice to her. He carried her things for her, helped her to get into and out of the car and even pretended to like her unpleasant dogs and offered to look after them in his free time. He fed them, cleaned them and took them for walks for some years.

The young waiter did not doubt that, when the rich woman died, she would leave him a lot of money, to pay him for everything that he had done for her and her dogs. But when she did die a few years later, he soon discovered that she had left him only two things which she loved most in the world, and which she thought that he loved too — her dogs. All her money went to her children.

Listen to the story about what happened to Mr. Brown one dark night and answer the questions below.

  1. What did Mr. Brown do one late evening?

  2. How did the man behave himself?

  3. Why did the man follow Mr. Brown?

Script

Mr. Brown, who lived in a very quiet place, was on his way home from the railway station. It was very late, and he was alone on the dark road. Suddenly he heard somebody behind him, and he had an unpleasant feeling that the man was following him. He began to walk faster. The man behind him walked faster too. He began to run, but the man ran after him. Now he was sure the man was following him and he was really frightened.

There was a wall on one side of the road, and he quickly climbed up on it and jumped down on the other side. “If he passes and doesn't stop," Mr. Brown thought, "everything will be all right." But the man didn't pass. He climbed up on the wall and jumped down, just as Mr. Brown had done. Now Mr. Brown's only thought was: "I'm in danger! Then he thought: "If he thinks that I am a coward, I’ll soon show him that he is making a mistake!" And he stood up and shouted, "What do you want? Why are you following me?"

The other man was so tired that at first it was difficult for him to speak. "I didn't know that you are such an athlete," he said at last. "I have to go to Mr. White's house, but I don't know the way. A man at the station told me that you live across the street from Mr. White, and he told me to follow you. Please tell me, how long will it take us to get there? I don't think I can go farther!"

  3. Did the guard wake Mark Twain? Why?

Script

Mark Twain, the well-known American writer, was going to Manchester by train. He was very tired and wanted to go to bed. So he asked the guard to tell him when they came to Manchester. "If I am sleeping when you come to me, I'll be angry," he said. "But I must be in Manchester in the morning. So even if I am angry, please throw me out of the train." The guard agreed, and Mark Twain went to bed.

When he opened his eyes, it was morning. People were walking in the corridor. Mark Twain got up, put on his clothes and went out into the corridor. The guard was talking to a man at the end of the corridor, and Mark Twain went up to him.

Listen to a short story about Conan Doyle and answer the questions below.

  1. Where did Conan Doyle order the driver of the taxi to take him to?

  2. Has the driver seen Conan Doyle before?

  3. How did the driver know who his passenger was?

Script

Conan Doyle once arrived in Paris, after spending a month in the south of France. There was a long row of cabs outside the gate of the railway station. Conan Doyle got into the first taxi and ordered the driver to take him to a good hotel. The driver was silent on the way to the hotel, but when Conan Doyle paid him, he said, "Thank you, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."

"How do you know who I am?" Conan Doyle asked in the greatest surprise.

"I have never seen you before," the man answered, "so I can't pretend that I recognized you. But I have always been proud of my memory. Besides, I have always been able to notice small things. I read in the newspapers that you were expected in Paris after your vacation in the south of France. The train you arrived on came from the south of France. I could tell from your clothes, especially your hat, and also from the strange way you pronounce French words that you were English. These facts helped me to guess that you were probably Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."

"Fine work! Wonderful!" Conan Doyle cried. "You analysed the facts quite correctly. It's a pity you aren't a detective!"

"Of course," the driver added, "your name is on both your travelling bags. I can't pretend that that fact didn't help."

Listen to the story about a newspaper joke and answer the questions below.

  1. What difficulties did the newspaper “Springfield Voice” have?

  2. Why did the “Springfield Voice” decide to teach its enemies a lesson?

  3. What did the “Springfield Voice” write on the first of April?

Script

This happened more than fifty years ago, in a little American town called Springfield. The newspaper "Springfield Voice" had a very difficult life. The newspaper hadn't enough money and couldn't pay its workers. But it had one difficulty that was even worse. When some interesting news appeared in the "Springfield Voice", the rest of the newspapers in the town at once published the same news as their own.

At last the "Springfield Voice" decided to teach its enemies a lesson. In the morning, on the first of April, the "Springfield Voice" published the news that a coffee king whose name was Lirpa Loof had come from abroad and was going to visit Springfield. Of course, this was tremendous news in such a little town. In the afternoon, all the other newspapers in the town wrote about Mr. Lirpa Loof. One of the newspapers published an interview with the rich businessman; another newspaper gave an interesting story of his life. Another newspaper told its readers that Mr. Lirpa Loof had had a meeting with the businessmen of the town, who were planning to buy coffee from him.

The next day, April 2, the "Springfield Voice" wrote: "Of course, we are proud that the other newspapers believed our story about the rich foreign businessman Lirpa Loof. But they must not forget what the date was yesterday. Read the first, then the second word - LIRPA LOOF—from the end to the beginning, and you will see why they must not forget that day."

Listen to the story about what happened to Mr. Jones on the train one day and answer the questions below.

  1. What did Mr. Jones use to do in the trains to be comfortable?

  2. Did Mr. Jones feel happy when the old gentleman sat down next to him?

  3. What did the old gentleman do with the suitcase when the train began to move?

Script

Mr. Jones liked to be comfortable, so when he got into the trains he always used to put his suitcase on the seat beside him, and pretended that it belonged to another passenger who had gone to buy something in the station.

One day he did this when the train was very crowded; the passengers came and sat in all the other seats except the one which his suitcase was lying on.

Then an old gentleman arrived, looked at Mr. Jones’s case and said, ''Is this somebody's seat?"

"Yes," answered Mr. Jones. "A friend of mine is traveling with me and he has gone to buy some cigarettes. He will return soon." Mr. Jones opened the window and looked out to make the old gentleman think that he was anxious about his friend.

"All right," said the old gentleman, "I'll sit here until your friend comes back, and then I'll stand somewhere." Mr. Jones did not feel happy about this, but he couldn’t do or say anything, because all the other passengers were watching and listening.

Several minutes passed and the train began to move. Then the old gentleman jumped up and said, "I'm very sorry, but your friend seems to have missed the train. We don't want him to be separated from his suitcase, do we?" and before Mr. Jones could do or say anything to stop him, he took his suitcase and threw it out of the window.

You can be sure that Mr. Jones never tried to play that game again.

Listen to the letter to parents and answer the questions below.

  1. Why did the parents send his son to Britain?

  2. What strange habits does the family have?

  3. How does the boy describe English people?

Script

Dear Mum and Dad,

It was a great idea to send me over to Britain to learn English this summer! We do have English lessons in the day, and I have to talk to the family I stay with here.

Do you know most English people only talk about the weather? Sometimes we have rain, sometimes windy days, sometimes fog but I haven't seen any snow yet. After all it is summer.

The family I live with are very nice. But they have some strange habits. They drink tea all the day: at breakfast, in the afternoon and at bedtime. And they eat butter with salt in it!

If I go out in the evening, I often eat fish and chips. The food is wrapped in a newspaper.

They have a son. He works as a clerk in a big office. Every morning he gets up at six, does his physical exercises and has his morning meal. Then he leaves the house and walks to the station.

Here on the coast we travel by bus. The buses are always late. I was knocked down by an old lady the other day because I didn't stand in the queue she hit me over the head with her handbag.

English people seem very quiet and reserved, usually. If we make a noise on the bus they look embarrassed so I was very surprised to see how violent they become about queues. Also, if you ask them directions, they suddenly become very chatty.

Your loving son.

  1. Why was the goat left behind the other goats?

  2. Whom did she meet in the cave?

  3. Why did the lion go out of the cave?

Script

Once upon a time there was an old goat. One day, when it was getting dark, she was returning home with many other goats. As she was old and weak she got tired and was left behind. It became quite dark, and as she could not find her way back, she decided to enter a cave that she saw near by. What was her surprise when she went in and found a lion sitting there. She was terribly frightened and stood still for a moment, and then she thought of what she could do.

"If I try to run" she thought, "the lion will soon catch me, but if I pretend not to be afraid of him I may save my life."

She walked boldly up to the lion as if she were not afraid of him at all. The lion looked at her, looked and looked. He did not know what to think of this goat’s boldness He knew goats had never dare to come near him. At last he thought she could not be a goat but must be some other strange animal which he had not seen before.

"Who are you, old one?" he asked her.

"I am the Queen of the Goats," she answered. "I came to devour a hundred of tigers, twenty-five elephants and ten lions. I have already eaten the hundred of tigers and twenty-five elephants and now I am looking for ten lions. "

The lion was very much surprised to hear this, and believed that the goat had really come to devour him. So he went out of the cave, saying that he was going to wash his face at the river and ran away.

  3. Did Gortsby give money to the young man?

Norman Gortsby sat on a bench in the park. It was 7 o’clock and it was almost dark.

There was an old man in a brown coat on the bench near him. Some minutes later he left and soon after that a young man sat down on the bench. He said: "Today I've made the worst mistake in my life."

"Yes?" said Gortsby.

"I came to London this morning. It's my first visit to this city. When I checked in at the hotel I went out to buy a cake of soap, as I don't like the hotel soap. When I decided to come back to the hotel I couldn't remember its name or the name of the street it is in. I'm afraid I'll spend the night in the park, as I have no money and no friends in London. Do you find my story impossible?" asked the young man.

"I don't find your story impossible but I don't think that you can show me the soap", said Gortsby.

The young man began looking for the soap in his coat. "I've lost it", he said in a moment. "It's too much to lose a hotel and a cake of soap on one afternoon", said Gortsby.

The young man did not say a word and left.

A few minutes later Gortsby saw a small white parcel near the bench. It was a cake of soap. Gortsby went to look for the young man. He saw him at the traffic lights.

"I'm sorry I didn't believe you. Here is some money and your cake of soap. Don't lose it again", said Gortsby.

  3. Where did Black want to get a job?

Script

Two of my friends lived in a small town near Liverpool. Their names were Stevenson and Black. They lost their jobs and were happy to agree to any new job

Stevenson was a very talented engineer and Black was a very good clerk.

One day Stevenson read in a newspaper that a chemical plant wanted an engineer and decided to go to Liverpool himself instead of sending the documents by air mail

"I think", Stevenson said, "Many people want to get this job and many of them will send letters. If I get to the plant before the manager receives the letter, I think I shall get the job".

Stevenson was right. He received the job.

I told my friend Black Stevenson's story.

A few days later I met Black. He was going to Mexico. A bank there wanted a clerk. He sent his documents by air mail, but decided to go there himself. He remembered Stevenson’s story

His letter had come to the bank 3 days earlier. When he came to the Bank the assistant-manager said he would speak to the manager about it and he left the office.

"Yes", the manager said, "I have received a letter from a man who lives near Liverpool. His name is Black. I have sent him a telegram to come here, and we will keep the job for him for 10 days. Tell that man outside “no”.

Black had not heard the conversation between the manager and his assistant. He had to go back home. But as he had spent all his money, it took him 2 months to get back to England. There he found the telegram which was waiting for him.

  1. Where did the man stop on his way home from the supermarket?

  2. What did the people think of his groceries?

  3. Why couldn't he take his groceries home?

Script

One day my wife sent me to the supermarket to buy some food. On my way home I dropped in an art gallery where there was a modern-art exhibition. The bags of groceries got heavier and heavier. Finally I just left them on the floor.

When I left the gallery, I had forgotten to take the food home. "Where are the groceries?" my wife asked. "Oh, dear", I cried. "I must have left them at the gallery". Immediately, I rushed back to the gallery.

When I arrived there, a lot of people were standing round the very spot where I must have left the groceries. Some of them said, "What a fine piece of art. Do you know this young artist?"

I also wanted to have a look at the fine piece of art, but I couldn't see anything except my groceries.

When I told the owner of the gallery that I wanted to have my groceries back he said, "We have been looking for you. Why didn't you sign your work of art?"

"It's not art", I answered, "It's my dinner".

"Ladies and gentlemen! He's not only a great artist, but he has a sense of humour as well. It's a great pleasure for me to tell you that this man has won the first prize for his fine piece of art", the owner of the gallery said

"Thank you very much", I replied, "but now I'm hungry and my wife is waiting for me. The groceries cost me $ 10. I have to get this stuff home."

"Home!", the owner of the gallery said in amazement. "We have just sold it to that lady for $ 1,500."

Listen to the story about a lonely postman and answer the questions below.

  1. Did the boys like the postman?

  2. How did the boys decide to help him?

  3. Did Mr. Evans tell the boys about the doctor’s recommendations? Why?

Script

We didn't like our postman, Mr. Evans as he was always shouting at us telling us not to touch his fence.

One afternoon Bill told us that he had seen Mr. Evans kick his dog Rusty. Bill, Tom and I decided it was time to do something about him. So we made a slide just outside Evans’s house. We leant against his fence, and waited for him. As soon as he saw us, he reached the slide waving his arms and shouting, "get off my fence!"

Then he fell down with his bag on the top of him. "Ow!" he said, getting up slowly. "I've broken my arm." We took him to the doctor's and waited for him, hoping his arm was not really broken. When he came out his arm was bandaged.

"I shan't be able to do my work", he said. "I shall lose my job."

We looked at each other. It was our fault. "We'll help you, Mr. Evans", I said. We got up at six in the morning, and met Evans. We carried his post bag, and knocked on the doors helping him with the delivery.

Some weeks later we met the doctor. We were just delivering his letters when he opened the front door and came out. He looked at us with surprise. Then he saw Evans’s arm.

"What's this?" he said, "What are the bandages for? I told you to do as much work with this arm as possible!"

We looked at Evans. "You are not angry, are you?", he said. "A postman's job is a very lonely one. It's nicer to have someone to talk to."

БИЛЕТ № 19
Listen to the story about one day Susan and Phillip spent together and answer the questions below.

  1. What did Philip tell Susan about the place he brought her to?

  2. What surprise did Philip give Susan?

  3. Why did she decide to wear the ring only in July?

Script

It was the first day they had spent together for months. Philip had been thinking about it ever since he had got Susan's letter.

"What a nice place you've brought me to!" Susan cried, and danced round him. Philip had left the car at the side of the road, and they had walked up the hill together.

"Have you been here before?" she asked.

"I used to come up here a lot, years ago. You see that old stone house?" he said. "I can remember it being there when I was a boy."

Susan blushed and looked at the sky. "Come on", she said. "Rain is on the way".

They got in the car and Philip drove to the town. "Do I have any time for my little surprise? How much longer can you stay with me?" he asked.

"I have to be back at six." Susan looked puzzled.

Philip explained what he meant. "I just wanted to buy you something before you go back", he said.

Philip took Susan to a small jeweller's shop. They went into the shop and Susan chose the ring she liked best - a thin gold one with a small diamond in it. Philip put the ring on her finger and she beamed with pleasure.

"Keep the ring for me", Susan said to Philip. "We are not allowed to wear jewelry at school. But July will soon be here and then I'll be able to wear it all the time."

Their day together was over and Philip took her back to school.

"Don't forget to collect me at the end of the term, Daddy, and don't forget to write.''

БИЛЕТ № 20
Listen to the story about uncle Theo and answer the questions below.

  1. Where did Uncle Theo apply for a post?

  2. When did the committee decide to make the final choice?

  3. Whose speech did Adams read?

Script

I would like to tell you a story about my uncle Theo. He's quiet and gentle and absent-minded. He applied for a post in Camford University. There were hundreds of candidates including Theo.

Now Camford is a very small town. There is only one hotel in it, and they had to put two candidates in every room. The man who shared the room with Theo was a self-confident fellow called Adams, about twenty years younger than Theo. But he was clever

The committee at the University interviewed all the candidates, and the number was reduced to two, Uncle Theo and Adams. The committee couldn't decide which of them to take, so they decided to make their final choice after each candidate had given a public lecture in a college in three day's time.

For three days Uncle Theo never left his room. He worked day and night almost without eating or sleeping. Adams didn't seem to do any preparation at all.

The day of the lecture arrived. They all went into the lecture-hall and then Theo found out that the typewritten copy of his speech had disappeared. The Dean said he would call on the candidates in the alphabetical order. Adams was the first. With despair in his heart, Theo watched Adams calmly take the stolen speech out of his pocket and read it to the professors who gathered to listen to it. And how well he read it! When Adams finished there was a great burst of applause.
