  • Reading Counts Contest: Individual, Class and School-Wide Awards and Quizzes: Grades K-5

  • Edu-Typing grades 4-5

  • 3 Book Houses for the Community: “Take a Book, Leave a Book”

  • Race to Read Program with Daytona International Speedway

  • Art projects for book covers. Grade level winners will be presented at the Winter Festival on Friday evening, January 30th.

Blue Lake Elementary will be participating in the state’s “Reading Accelerates Success” reading program for Celebrate Literacy Week.

  • Teacher’s will show PSA Celebrate Literacy kickoff video to their classes:

  • Each class will have a 20 min DEAR (DROP EVERYTHING AND READ) Reading time during the day. After completed, each teacher will send a note or email the media center with the number of students participating and the number of minutes read by each student. Ex) 20 students at 20 minutes each =400 minutes. The media will total the school’s minutes for the first day and submit them to the state.


  • Begin book cover contest with grades K-5 with Art classes and during Media Special area. Students will design an original book cover throughout the week. Book covers will be due on Wednesday, January 28th for Judging by the classes and Administration.

  • Each class will have a 20 min DEAR Reading time during the day.

  • Favorite Book Milk Jug Igloo: We are asking for donations of 1 gallon milk jugs from the school community for making a favorite book igloo for the winter festival Friday night, January 30th.

the day.

  • Student book covers art project must be submitted by teachers by today for judging.
  • Mystery Readers in classes during Reading Block for 5 minutes.

  • Each class will have a 20 min DEAR Reading time during the day.

  • Reading Buddies: 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be paired with the primary grades to read books with primary students. Teachers will choose books for students to read.

January 30

  • Each class will have a 20 min DEAR Reading time during the day.

  • Winter Fall Festival: Theme is related to Celebrate Literacy Week. Events at Fall Festival will include: bookmark making stand, reading stations, snowflake making, photo box backdrop, igloo station, bounce houses, DJ and etc.

  • Character dress up day: All students may dress up as their favorite literary character for the school day. Volusia County dress code rules still apply. Costumes must be appropriate and from a fiction or non-fiction book. Students may not wear masks or face paint. We will select several students to highlight their costumes on our morning Splash News program.
