BOOK OF THE WEEK:  This week's book presents a biographical discussion of Pat Tillman, covering the true events and actions surrounding the death of the U. S. Army soldier by friendly fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2004.  It also examines the misrepresentation of his story by the Bush administration before the truth was revealed.  Check out this week's featured book, When Men Win Glory by Jon Krakauer.
Picture Day is Tuesday, October 6.
If you want to bring a non-GHS guest to the Homecoming Dance, please sign them up in the office. The guests must be high school age and under age 21.

Hey, GHS!!  The science department has challenged YOU to a lip sync challenge. Using the app Dubsmash, create a video (or several) over the topic of HOMECOMING 2015.  Dubsmash can be found in the Chrome store on your computer or by downloading it on your phone.  Once you have a clip, send it to Mrs. Richards by a google document. The science department will choose the best and share them by Friday.  Of course, there will be FABULOUS prizes!!!  

**Please make sure all videos are appropriate!! 

**CHANGE- if you have already sent Mrs. Richards an email of your dubsmash clip, please resend through a google document or share the link. It will not work through email.  

GHS Iron Chef Competition--Friday, September 25, 7-8 am. Teams of three will compete against the amazing Chef Backlin in a no-holds barred culinary show-down. Want to cook? Sign up outside Mrs. Skouson's room (at least one person on your team must have taken, or be currently enrolled in Foods). Want to judge? Sign up outside Mrs. Skouson's room. Want to be a spectator? Come on September 25th for the event of the trimester! Questions? Talk to Mrs. Skouson.

       Tiger Spirit Day!! (Dress up to support our Tiger Football team #tigerfootball)
The Grinnell Community High School chapter of the National Honor Society is now taking applications for membership.  For application information, go to and follow the instructions.  Application deadline is Sept 25, 2015.  Application is open to members of the Junior and Senior classes only.

The JV football team lost 30-18 at Bondurant-Farrar.
This Thursday, September 24th, following the homecoming parade and pep rally, will be the annual Powderpuff football tournament at TT cranny! Admission will be free this year and no concession stand will be available.


College visits today:  Indian Hills Community College at 9:00 and Grinnell College at 10:30. Please get a prior pass in the counseling office.
The Elks National Foundation offers many scholarships every year.  Again this year the ENF will award 500 Most Valuable Students Scholarships, which are four year college scholarships to graduating seniors in the United States who show scholarship, leadership and financial need.  Online application is found at Applications must be submitted on or before December 4 to the Elks Lodge closest to you.  The selection of winners begins at the local Lodge level and continues through district, state and national judging.  Our local Lodge contact is Verne Jarvela at or 641-236-3520.
Also the Elks National Foundation offers scholarships for Elks families.  The Legacy Awards offers 250 college scholarships worth $4000 to the children and grandchildren of dues paying Elks members.  Applicants compete against other applicants from the state of their sponsoring Elks Lodge.  They are judged on the core values of the Elks:  knowledge, charity, community service and integrity.  Deadline for applications submitted online is January 29, 2016.  Applications are found at www.elks,org/enf/scholars. 

Create characters faster than a speeding bullet! Laugh more powerfully than a locomotive! Be able to imagine tall tales in a single bound! Celebrate Superhero Day at Improv after school in Mrs. Hansen's room (room 17). Up, up, and away!
Curtain Club, the GHS drama club, will meet today at 3:20 pm in Room 17. Winners of last week's scavenger hunt will be revealed and prizes awarded! New members welcome. Come for the treats! 
GHS Feminism and Diversity Alliance are teaming up to host a homecoming scavenger hunt! Complete the daily challenges and post your selfies on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #TigerEquality for a chance to win a prize! (see attached picture for list of challenges)
