HISTORY OF THE INDEX
Cyril’s index for 1911-1973 was the first one I ever came across. This was a copy of a copy of copy, etc. It was included with early bound volumes of The Ringing World purchased from Teddy Barnett, former secretary to the Central Council. This early edition of Cyril’s index also included many additional entries by Teddy.
It was this early index which led me to Cyril’s copy of The Bell News Index, published last year, and on to Cyril’s latest index which covers the years 1911-1992. Teddy Barnett’s entries were added to the 1911-1992 edition.
Some time before 1993, Rowena Gay commenced annual indexes on behalf of The Ringing World. These were initially published as separate indexes available from The Ringing World office. The 1993, and later, indexes were placed on the web site and the last two years are also available as WORD documents.
Although Cyril’s The Bell News Index was very comprehensive, his Ringing World indexes have not been as detailed. They would have run into hundreds of pages if they were like The Bell News Index. Rowena has prepared quite detailed indexes for each year although not in the same way as Cyril did for The Bell News.
To complete the indexes from 1911 to date, it was necessary to combine first of all 1993-2002 indexes and then to add the latest one for 2003.
Each indexer has a different style of indexing and thoughts of how and what to index. Marrying the two styles certainly presented its problems. Hopefully this has been accomplished.
For instance, one will find that Cyril’s obituaries simply appear under the individual’s name, whereas Rowena has them all listed under the heading “Obituaries”. Once one understands that there are a few quirks like this, then one will know to check more than a single source for the details of year/pages required.
Cyril uses references to both old and new county names whereas Rowena only uses the current one. With some locations changing their county name more than once, a location could be under one of three county names.
Finally, thank you Cyril, Teddy and Rowena for doing all the work! I only had to scan and OCR Cyril’s original material and merge the last eleven indexes before merging them together. For one to index The Ringing World for the last 92 years without Cyril and Rowena’s work would have been impossible and would never be finished. Of course, as long as The Ringing World continues to be published, this index can never be finished. Meanwhile, it should be an invaluable reference source.

All references are in the form of year/page no.
There are two volumes per year for 1912/13/14/15/16,
therefore, there are duplicate page numbers in each year.
