K-2 Writing Prompts

  • Prompt should be administered to each K-2 student in CCS according to the assessment timeline.

  • This unassisted writing is not timed but should be completed in one 30 – 60 minute session.

  • Each student writing sample should include the student name, teacher name, and date (month, day, year.)

  • The teacher may write the prompt on the board for students to refer to during their writing activity. Students do not have to copy the prompt.

  • Students should be given the opportunity to illustrate their story with a drawing.

  • Use the K-2 assessment flip chart to review rubric and specific information (see pages 18 - 19.) Teachers should attach the “K-2 Writing Continuum” rubric to each writing sample to document the features that appear in student’s writing.
