CELEBRATION

Words and music: Peter Kearney

CHORUS:

Join the celebration of the Word

Have you heard the joyful news

Oh have you heard?

God has talked to Jesus

And his Word has come to us now

Join the celebration of the Word.
1. God's truth is like a rock

Like a rock so strong that it just won't move.

Build your house on rock

And you know you'll never ever need another.

2. God's Kingdom is like a seed

And a seed's so small when it's in the ground

Up comes a great Gum Tree

And all the birds are sheltered in its branches.

3. Jesus is our light.

He's a light that shines so we all can see

Shining in the night..

He will guide us home when we are lost and frightened.

4. God's peace is like a stream

Like the brook so cool or the creek so clear

Making all life green

And he told us come and drink if we are thirsty.

PETER WAS A FISHERMAN

Words and music: Peter Kearney

Peter was a fisherman

Fished on the Sea of Galilee.

Jesus came a'walking by

Walked by- Peter follow me.

Peter will you follow me? Yes Lord yes.

Peter will you follow me. Yes Lord yes.

Peter said a lot of words in his life

But the best word he ever said was yes

Yes Lord yes.

Peter was a sturdy man

Big man- Jesus called him 'Rock'.

Knock once- Peter loved his Lord.

Knock twice- He really loved his Lord.

"Peter walk on water, walk alone".

Peter answered "Yes Lord". Sank like a stone.

Peter said a lot of words in his life

But the hardest word of all was yes

Yes Lord yes.
One night when he heard the cock

Three knocks- what a night of shame!

Made out he didn't know his Lord

No Lord when the questions came:

Surely you were with him? No. No. No.

Do you call him Master? No I don't!

Peter started crying when the cock did crow

The saddest word he ever said was no

No Lord no.
Last time that the Lord appeared

No fear, all forgiven now.

Bowed down to his risen Lord

Yes Lord was his answer now.

Peter do you love me? Yes Lord yes.

Peter do you love me? Yes Lord yes.

Peter do you love me? Yes.Yes. Yes!

Then feed my lambs and sheep. Yes Lord yes.

Peter said a lot of words in his life

But the best word he ever said was...

Yes Lord yes!

THANKYOU GOD FOR LOVING ME

Words and music: Peter Kearney

You love me each day like new

Thankyou God for loving me.

Though sometimes I don't love You.

Thankyou God for loving me.

For loving me.. oo oo ooh

Ooo oo oo oo ooh.. or loving me.
You're my Father, Mother too

Thankyou God for loving me.

Though sometimes I may hurt you..

Thankyou God for loving me.

For loving me.. oo oo ooh

Ooo oo oo oo ooh.. or loving me.

You're my Brother, Sister too..

Thankyou God for loving me.

Though sometimes I don't help you

Thankyou God for loving me.

For loving me.. oo oo ooh

Ooo oo oo oo ooh.. or loving me.

No more hiding, no more fear

Thankyou God for loving me.

No more crying, no more tear

Thankyou God for loving me.

For loving me.. oo oo ooh

Ooo oo oo oo ooh.. or loving me.

Love so deep as deep can be

Thankyou God for loving me.

Love so deep you'd die for me

Thankyou God for loving me.

For loving me.. oo oo ooh

Ooo oo oo oo ooh.. or loving me

MARY WHEN YOU WERE A GIRL

(On the early life of Blessed Mary MacKillop)

Words and music: Peter Kearney

Mary when you were a girl

The city of Melbourne was more like a town

And you knew the joys of the world

In the days when you were a girl.

Born in Australia, a child of the sun

The bush never far away;

There were horses to ride and creeks you could swim

And God was in everything.

Yes you knew the joys of the world

In the days when you were a girl.
Oh Mary, when you were a girl

Your Dad lost his job and the family was poor

And you knew the cares of the world

In the days when you were a girl.

The eldest of eight, you grew up so fast

Your mother depended on you

And your father was sad, so often away

There was much you had to do.

Yes you knew the cares of the world

In the days when you were a girl.

Oh Mary when you were a girl

You were plain but beautiful, deep were your eyes

And you knew the dreams of the world

In the days when you were a girl.

You stood on the beaches and watched as the waves

melted the castles of sand

And you trusted that God was caring for you

And reached for a guiding hand.

Yes you knew the dreams of the world

In the days when you were a girl.

PENTECOST

Words and music: Peter Kearney

When the Lord was gone

The disciples were afraid.

When the Lord was gone

They stayed inside all day

With the windows locked and barred

Big bolts on the door

But when the Spirit came

They felt afraid no more.
Pentecost, oh Pentecost

All is gained and nothing lost.

When the Spirit came

Everyone was changed.
When they were alone

The disciples were confused.

When they were alone

Oh they were confused.

Then the wind came blowing hard

Blew their clouds from sight;

When the Spirit came

Then they saw the light.

When they lost their Lord

The disciples were so sad.

When they lost their Lord,

Oh they were so sad.

Flames of fire blazing down-

This is what they saw;

When the Spirit came

They were sad no more.

When the Lord was gone

The disciples lost their love.

When the Lord was gone

Oh they lost their love.

But God the Father sent to them

A helper and a friend-

When the Spirt came

They found their love again.

WHAT'S THE NEWS?!

Words and music: Peter Kearney

1. What's the news? What's the news?

What's the news. Mary tell your story.

What's the news? What's the news?

What's the news. Mary tell your story.

Mary tell your story.

We went early to the tomb

With our spices and perfumes

But the stone was rolled away when we arrived.

Two men stood shining bright

Oh they gave us such a fright

And they spoke like dynamite:

He's alive. He's alive. He's alive. He's alive!

[Each time 'he's alive' is sung, the children extend their arms upward and outward.]

That's the news. That's the news. That's the news.

Thankyou for your story.

Thankyou for your story.

2. What's the news? What's the news?

What's the news. Mary tell your story.

What's the news? What's the news?

What's the news. Peter tell your story.

Peter tell your story.
Well when Mary told us here

We could not believe our ears

But she spoke so strong and clear

She told no lie.

Well I left them in that room

And I ran down to the tomb..

Now you might think I'm a loon

But he's alive. He's alive. He's alive. He's alive!

That's the news. That's the news. That's the news.

Thankyou for your story.

Thankyou for your story.
3. What's the news? What's the news?

What's the news. Mary tell your story.

What's the news? What's the news?

What's the news. Come and tell your story.

Come and tell your story.
Well he gave us quite a shock

he was there without a knock

And I'll tell you what

We couldn't believe our eyes.

But we touched his hands and feet

And we gave him fish to eat

So we know there's no deceit:

He's alive. He's alive. He's alive. He's alive!

That's the news. That's the news. That's the news.

Thankyou for your story.

That's the news. That's the news.

(Shout) THAT'S THE NEWS!

PEACEMAKER

Words and music: Peter Kearney

You could be kind when the world was cruel

Stay in your peace when they called you a fool.
Jesus could you make of me a peacemaker.
Who put the scratch on my shiny new bike?

You tell me to love but I don’t even like!

When you got hit, you turned your cheek.

If I did the same, they’d think I was weak.

Turn on the news, the world is at war

Some of us rich, so many are poor.

You are the Lord and peace you declare

You want us to love, want us to share.

JOSEPH

Words and music: Peter Kearney

In the dusty town of Nazareth

Where you walked at the joiner’s trade

Sturdy chairs and tables

Were the things that Joseph made;

It was there that your son Jesus

Became a joiner too-

Good Saint Joseph was he glad to learn from you?

You had been through so much trouble

In the days that lay behind-

From Bethlehem to Egypt

But still your heart was kind.

And in all the jingle-jangle

And the rush of every day

You were quiet like a river on its way.
And you lived in times of danger

That were hard to understand

When Rome was like a giant

Striding right across your land;

Yes Rome was like a giant

But you saw the feet of clay-

Help us Joseph to see as clear today.
And I wonder how it happened

That your family was so poor?

Was it from the day the Romans

Came and knocked upon your door

And you would not build their crosses

No matter what the pay?

I wonder Joseph, did it happen just that way?
In the dusty town of Nazareth

Where you walked at the joiner’s trade

Sturdy chairs and tables

Were the things that Joseph made;

With your hands so firm yet gentle

And your heart so strong and true-

Good Saint Joseph I’d be glad to learn from you.

Good Saint Joseph I’d be glad to learn from you.

TAKE ME FOR A RIDE IN YOUR BASIN JASON.

Script

Words and music: Peter Kearney

In the Irish version the word ‘spin’ is sung/spoken throughout instead of ‘ride’.

[Actors needed: a girl who can be embarrasingly charming and cheeky.. and a boy who can be..cool. They should have strong voices. We also need an Announcer/ Matchmaker.. an older girl who can act bossy.

Girl: Lovely day Jas..

Jason: Yeahh, I suppose so

Girl: Is that your basin Jason?

Jason: Yeahh, what of it?

Girl: Take me for a ride in your basin, Jason!
CHORUS:

Take me for a ride in your basin, Jason

Show me how the water can fly..

Hummin' in the wind in your old basin

Jason will you take me for a ride.
[Jason starts cleaning imaginary basin, girl gets closer and closer to look]
V1. The sky was blue

Every single flower was a sun shining

[Jason: Buzz off! Girl turns away, offended.]

Everything and everyone were smiling

And she said:
Oh will you take me for a ride..etc
V2. The sea was calm.

Can you not imagine how it was then..

[Choir dreamily..Yeahh]

Far from all the hurry and the bustling

Sure was a beautiful day.
Girl & choir: [dreamily]

Yes it certainly was!

Jason: [slowly] Basins are a very technical business.

Girl: [impressed ..stands on tip-toe] OOOH!

Jason: [scratches head .. gives in, reluctantly]

All right.. get in now.. hold on tight.

Girl: [slowly] Anything you say Jas..

Take me for a ride in your basin..etc.

V3. She stepped right in. Said she was delighted to be riding.

Girl: Thanks Jas'

Thanked me very much for my obliging

So I said OK..

Jason: "You needn't have asked really."
Choir: [mocking him] Ohh yeahh!
The Announcer glides in.. smiling very cheesily. She comes up behind Jason and the Girl and puts her arms around their shoulders. As she does so she smiles at them, even talks to them. She might also tousle Jason's hair. She is very soppy.

CHORUS: Take me for a ride in your basin, Jason

Show me how the water can fly..

Hummin' in the wind in your old basin

Jason will you take me for a ride.

Announcer: [Loudly.. slowly]

Once again for the lovely young couple!

Jason: [disgusted] Couple??.. yukk!! [He walks off.]
The Announcer is very annoyed. She stamps the floor and glares at Jason angrily. During the Chorus that follows the she yells at him and goes to bring him back. The dialogue might go something like:
Announcer: "Come back here you selfish little brat. She's a lovely girl, you should give her a ride in your basin!"

Jason: "No way.. I don't like girls!"

Announcer: "Don't you talk to me like that, you come and give her a ride. She's a lovely girl!" [She drags Jason back to the microphone, shaking her finger at him. She is very bossy. Jason is very sulky. She gets him back into position before the end of the Chorus. She puts her arms around their shoulders again.]
CHORUS: Take me for a ride in your basin, Jason

Show me how the water can fly..

Hummin' in the wind in your old basin

Jason will you take me for a ride.

Girl: Another ride Jas?

Jason will you take me for a ride.

Jason: Naah.. get lost! He walks off again.

Jason will you take me for a ride.

Girl: It's a stupid basin anyway!

Announcer: Yeahh!..

[The Girl and the Announcer stomp off in the opposite direction, arm in arm. Jason makes faces at them.]
FOOTBALL CRAZY

Traditional.

I have a favourite brother, his Chistian name is Paul

He's lately joined the football club and he's mad about football.

He's two black eyes already and teeth lost from his gob

Since Paul became a member of that terrible football club.

He's football crazy, he's football mad

That football has taken away the little bit of sense he had

And it would take a dozen servants to wash his clothes and scrub

Since Paul became a member of that terrible football club.

In the middle of the field, the captain said, "Now Paul

Would you kindly take this goal kick since you're mad about football".

He took forty paces backwards and shot off from the mark...

The ball went sailing over the goal and landed after dark!

Now Paul he had a girlfriend and they set the wedding date

But he found he had a football match and said she'd have to wait.

So she dressed up in a bridegown and to the match she came...

The whistle blew to wed those two in the middle of a football game.

Now his wife, she says she'll leave him if Paul he doesn't keep

Away from kicking footballs at night time in his sleep;

He calls out "Pass McGinty!" and other things so droll...

Last night he kicked her out of the bed and scored another goal!

Well they had lots of children- what a fine and healthy batch.

Said Paul, "we'll make a football team and we'll win every match".

So he bought a little football and taught them how to kick it..

It broke his heart the day he found the game they loved was.. cricket!

THE SWAN

Words: Lesley Baker & Jennifer Penn (aged 12)

Music: Peter Kearney

She glides like a beauty queen in a long white gown

With her head held high in the air

But on her face she wears a frown.

“Oh why are you frowning my pretty bird?”

“I am not frowning, my pretty man.

It’s all Mother Nature’s fault- she gave me this face

So to counteract my speed and grace”.
