Directions: The following exercise is based on the PowerPoint presentation Folktale Analysis Notes. Read the descriptions below and complete the chart by following each of the directions.
Hero/Heroine: Describe the hero or heroine in the story.

Human Qualities: Describe the human qualities that are given to the characters in the story. Give examples.

Type of Folktale: What type of folktale would best describe this story? Explain why?

Problem/ Conflict: Describe the problem or conflict in the fairytale.

Supernatural/Magic: Describe how magic or supernatural power plays a role in the fairytale.

Story Comparison: Describe a story you have heard that is similar to this one. Explain how these two stories are similar.

The Buddha footprint: This story is referring to the Ayutthaya period governed by the King Songtham. A Buddha footprint is very respectable thing for monks. A group of Thai people went to Sri Lanka to worship a Buddha footprint. And Lankan monk told that there are five Buddha footprint and one of them is at the Suwannabanpot hill in Thailand. Thai monk retuned to Thailand and told it to The King. The king ordered a royal command to find the footprint in Suwannabanpot but they couldn’t find it. One day, A hunter Boon went to hunt animals and he saw a deer. He shot the deer and it got wound. The deer disappeared into the forest but soon the deer which had gotten wound appeared with no sigh of getting hurt. He wondered it and chased it. After that he found a big depression on a lock with full of water. And he found that it is very big human footprint and that’s Buddha’s footprint. He told it to the King and he decided to build the pagoda to cover it. Now, there are two ponds called Bor pran lang nue and Bor pran hok. Evry year many people come to worship them. The hunter Boon has been passed down again and again.

King ordered to find Buddha footprint. but none could not find for long time. But Boon found it while he was hunting.

He shut deerand it got damage. But deer appeared with any injured. he drunk a water which Deer drunk and his skin disease gone away.

Moral Teaching

There are many chances to be rich even they are poor.

Historical References

There is Suwannabanpot hill in Thailand now.

This story is about ayyutaya.

Tikawukumarn: There are two towns next each other. One is Benares. Its king has much power and its territories were getting expanded. Another one is Kasi. It has no power and the king is Tikiti. Tikawukumarn is a prince of its town. But Benares king wanted to have power so he attacked Kasi city. Tikiti family escaped and lived in Benares behind the arras. But they were found by the guardian and Tiki and queen were killed in front of Tikawukumarn. At the moment, He decided to revenge the Benares king. He did very hard work to be close to the king. However he became the guardian of the king and got a chance to kill him. They went to the picnic and the king lied down. Tikawukumarn had a knife and tried to kill him. But he heard his father’s voice. he said that we never revenge because the revenge create the revenge. King knew that Tikawukumarn is son of Tikiti and be afraid of revenge. But Tikawukumarn stopped his revenge because of his father’s voice. The king

Revenge is same as killing . it is not good way to be happy..

We are never allowed to do revenge. Revenge makes next revenge. Even though the mother or father were killed, We never kill the prisoner and do punish or accept.

The woodcutter: a poor man went to the forest to earn for his everyday’s life. But he dropped his axe by slipping from his hands. But guardian spirit appeared spirit felt sympathy and gave a chance to him to get axe. Spirit showed a silver and golden axe and asked him if this was his axe. He shook his head horizontally. He accepted only his axe and thanked the spirit. The spirit was impressed by man’s honesty and gave all axes. After returning his house, He sold his gold and silver axes and had a good life with his wife. One day, his old brother asked him how he became rich overnight. Younger brother told what had happened at that time to him. And older brother stole the old axe and pretended to lose his axe in the forest. The spirit appeared and noticed his greediness. Brother pointed out the golden and silver axe. But spirit got angry and took everything from him. So he lost everything and have nothing.

Human Qualities

Main character: He is very poor but kind and honest. His job is wood cutter. he is keeping his life by cutting wood.

Main character’s brother: he is very rich and not kind and dishonest person because he never share his rich and tried to get golden and silver axe from spirits to pretend honest.



Spirit: he tasted the human qualities.

Problem/ Conflict

He dropped his old axe into the lake by accident. A spirit appeared and gave a chance to him. If he was honest, he would get his axe, but if he was dishonest, he would lose everything. he was honest so he got all axe. But his brother tried to get golden axe by his strong greed. He pretended to drop his axe. but the spirit had knew everything. he was punished and he lost everything.

Supernatural/Magic

  1. the spirit appeared and gave a question to test the human’s qualities.

Moral Teaching

I learned that we should not be so greedy because I will have punishment.


Historical References

Normally Thai people are believe in Buddhism and as following Buddhism, they are very honest because if they tell a lie, they will have punishment and if they are honest, they can be happy.

Story Comparison

Japan has same theme’s story as this story. It is Hana saka Jiisan. This story tells that money makes us fall and kind to animal rather than money. It is Japanese fairly tale. An old couple was taking care of a dog. One day the dog dug and found gold. A neighbor tried to do same thing. He borrowed the dog but it found only bone. So he got angry and killed his dog. An old couple cried but in the dream the dog said throw the ashes to the tree. as they followed it, tree came in bloom. The Japanese king watched it and be happy. so he gave much money. A neighbor tried it but ashes went into king’s eye so he was killed.
