When someone comes up with a fresh
That’s out of the box
When something is out of the box -The box is the primary point of reference. We understand what is out of the box in relation to the box
Art theorists – insulators frame an event – provide reference point – to provide meaning for us
A well know speaker shared this example:
Symphony hall – dressed up – went back stage – people stretching – people in tights – Orchestra – usher hands you a program
- usher hands you a squirrel
- What? A squirrel!
Next question = where? Where do I put this?
WHO DID THIS? The disciples were anxious to blame someone. Such a bad thing can be traced back to a bad deed. Right?
Jesus replied. Blame this blindness on God’s calling for his life. Why was the man sightless? So “the works of God might be displayed in him.”
Chances are, he would have preferred another role in the human drama.
Can you imagine a conversation God was having with him. “Mary, be a mother to my son.”
“Peter, you’ll be my first preacher.
“Matthew, the first Gospel? It’s all yours.”
Then God turns to this man. “And you?”
“You’ll be blind for my glory.” “For your glory?”
“But I don’t understand.” “You’ll see.”
Max Lucado tells of a time he was looking around his office and noticed a frame that displayed his favorite picture of his son. There was also a metal stand that displayed an antique pot. His brother had given him a stained- glass window from a country church displayed on two wires and two hooks. Picture frames, metal stands, wires and hooks – different tools, same job. They DISPLAY treasures.
What these items did for valued possessions, the blind man did for Christ. He was the frame in which Jesus’ power was seen, the stand upon which Jesus’ miracle was placed.
God will use whatever he wants to display his glory. Heavens and stars. History and nations. People and problems.
What is it about suffering that brings people together?
[Stand if you have been affected by Cancer]
Suffering unites us in profound ways that prosperity does not.
The 2 most powerful words that anyone can every hear...more powerful than a lengthy sermon.... 2 words = “ME TOO”
When you’re questioning, crying, there’s nothing more healing than knowing someone else has been there. There’s nothing more comforting than hearing someone say, I know what you’re going through.” I’m in it with you.” ME TOO.
The book of Ruth – Naomi and her family is going through a tough time
- economic depression, husband loses his livelihood, family loses pretty much everything, so out of desperation, the move to a foreign country.
- Naomi is now poor, living in a foreign strange unfamiliar land, but at least she has her husband and 2 sons.
o Until husband gets sick and dies
o Her boys marry – then her 2 boys get sick and die
o You can only imagine her screaming at God, devastated WHY
ME? WHY WOULD YOU TAKE MY BOYS? She changes her
name to MARA which means bitter because the Almighty
has made my life very sad/bitter
o At the end of her rope, Naomi decides to move to Judah, she is a widow will have to live as a beggar. She sends her daughter in laws away – Go find new husbands – Don’t tie yourself down to my sad life.
- Look what happens: RUTH SAYS
“Where you go, I will go. Where you live, I will live, Your people will be my people and your God will be my God. And where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Not even death will separate us.
In Naomi’s darkest hour, God gives her Ruth – someone who will say “me too”
Pete Wilson says,
Don’t allow your pain, as deep as it might be, to keep you from fully embracing the gift of community. Don’t let your disappointment, as devastating as it might be, keep you from hearing (or saying) “me too.”
It’s a risk to be vulnerable and open. But to allow someone to say “ME TOO” or for you by sharing your pain and by you saying to someone through your pain “ME TOO” brings incredible healing to people in this journey.
[starting HOUSE CHURCH],
Pete Wilson continues to go on to say:
One of the single most important factors in whether we lean on God or not is the group of people we have around us. Separated from community, we tend to think the worst. Separated from community, we tend to tilt toward hopelessness. And while authentic community doesn’t’ take away the pain it helps to reframe the pain.
THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN DISAPPOINTMENT IS DISAPPOINTMENT WITHOUT A COMMUNITY.

Phil 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always”
I am with you always
IF HE’S WITH ME ALWAYS. I CAN REJOICE ALWAYS. IF HE’S WITH ME HERE. I CAN REJOICE THERE.
I’M GOING TO SAY IT AGAIN
Job Chapter 1
All of his FAMILY, KIDS, WEALTH, BELONGINGS it was wiped out in a day.
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground... in worship 21 and said:
THEN THE BIBLE SAYS HE WORSHIP GOD
Britt Merrick says
I want to be The kind of man that the more I lose the more I worship God. Because the more I lose in this world, the more of a treasure he becomes to me.
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart.[c]
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD
V22 Through all this Job did not sin, nor did he blame God. Shall we only take the good in life and not tragedy?
Has God not warned us that in this world you will face adversity but TAKE HEART I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.
None of this makes sense outside of Christ
