Dolly has been working for us for seven years now and her only dream was to find a husband with a good job so that she does not have to be a servant for the rest of her life. only thing she does not like, is the cigar ash spilled on the carpets by my dad and his friend Irving Brodie. My dad always smoked cigars, but he never inhaled because that was not good for your lungs, he said. I remember our weekend drives in the car round the Peninsula, the car was filled with dad’s cigar smoke, especially during winter because we could not open the car windows because of the rain.

This reminds me of the story of Table Mountain and the tablecloth my mother always told us when we were younger. My mother is a great storyteller and she says that the tablecloth is one of the seven wonders of the world.

The story of the tablecloth is about a very rich, retired pirate, Ort van Hunks, who decided to stay in Cape Town when it was still a halfway station between Europe and India. To escape his nagging wife he left the house every morning and went to sit on the ridge between Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak to enjoy smoking his clay pipe in peace. One morning an irritating voice disturbed him and asked if he may join him on his ridge. ‘Who are you?’ van Hunks wanted to know and the little man turned around and showed van Hunks the opening in the back of his trousers. ‘You are sitting on my peak,’ the little man said, pointing towards Devil’s Peak. Van Hunks realised who he was talking to and they both sat down to enjoy smoking their pipes. The two men became friendly with each other and started to gamble. They kept on playing and smoking for ages, refilling their pipes every time. The men were smoking so much that the smoke formed a cloud over Table Mountain, looking like a tablecloth. Van Hunks promised the devil to come back and play every summer. And every the mountain was covered by the tablecloth.

Dolly’s boyfriend, Amos was working next door for Dad’s friend, Mr. Brodie. He was their gardener. One day Dolly said that Amos has passed his matric exams, he wanted to become a lawyer. Amos thought the story of van Hunks and the devil was a lot of nonsense. He said that it was a white man’s story and that only a white man would believe that the cloud is only 300 years old. That tablecloth was there long before the white man came in his boat. A few days later Dolly was very upset when she found out that Amos has left his job. Mr. Brodie found one of Amos’ books and they had an argument and Mr. Brodie fired Amos because he thought it was silly for a black garden boy to have a school certificate.

A few years later Dolly heard from her brother that he had heard about a Xhosa lawyer defending a friend who was arrested during a protest march. From the description of the lawyer Dolly knew that it must be Amos.
