Programme Outline

This is the first part of a mini series of two programmes on the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. In this part, Dr Jekyll, a scientist is busy doing experiments when Mr Hyde appears for the first time in his house. Who is Mr Hyde? After his appearance, Dr Jekyll asks his old friend and lawyer, Utterson, to make a very strange will for him. He leaves all his wealth and property to Mr Hyde in the event of his death or disappearance. Utterson becomes suspicious and decides to find out more about Mr Hyde, who turns out to be a murderer. Fearing that Mr Hyde will murder his old friend for his money, Utterson comes to Dr Jekyll’s rescue and arrives at his laboratory. What has happened to Dr Jekyll? (To be continued in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde II)

Additional Information and Suggestions

Information about the story

The dramatized story presented in this mini series is adapted from the story, the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis (Lewis) Stevenson (1850 – 1894). Although adaptations have been made in the ETV programme for dramatic purposes, the gist of the story, that of dual personality is kept. Dr Jekyll’s experiments with himself were based on his belief that man was not truly one, but two. There was the part of Dr Jekyll that people saw everyday, a kind and calm scientist, and the crude and cruel part that was hidden beneath the face.

Suggested answers: (Other suitable words should also be accepted)

It was 9:00 o’clock in the morning. I was on my way home. I heard two men talking behind me. When I turned round, I saw Sir Danvers Carew and Mr Hyde. I did not like Mr Hyde very much, so I walked on a little more quickly. As soon as I turned to the corner of the street, I heard a loud cry. I peeped round the corner and was awed to find Mr Hyde waving his cane and beating Sir Danvers Carew with it. Mr Hyde seemed to have gone mad. He beat Sir Danvers so violently that Sir Danvers finally fell down on the ground. I was scared that I ran all the way home.
