Without question, one of the most remarkable Christian doctrines is that Jesus Christ himself through the Holy Spirit will actually enter a heart, settle down and be at home here. He said to his disciples, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching, my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23). It is interesting that Jesus uses a similar concept here (home) that he uses earlier in John 14: “I am going there to prepare a place for you… that you also may be where I am” (vv 2-3). He was promising that just as he was going to heaven to prepare a place for them and would one day welcome then there, so it would be possible for them to prepare a place for him in their hearts now. He would come and make his home with then right here.
This was beyond their comprehension. How could it be? Then came Pentecost. The Spirit of the living Christ was given to the church, and they experienced what he had foretold. The body of the believer had become the temple of the living God and the human heart the home of Jesus Christ. Thirty minutes after Pentecost the disciples knew more about Jesus than they had known in the previous three years.
I will never forget the evening I invited him into my heart. What an entrance he made! It was not a spectacular, emotional thing, but very real, occurring at the center of my soul. He came into the darkness of my heart and turned on the light. He built a fire in the cold hearth and banished the chill. He started music where there had been stillness and harmony where there had been discord. He filled the emptiness with his own loving fellowship. I have never regretted opening the door to Christ, and I never will.
After Christ entered my heart, in the joy of that new found relationship I said to him, “Lord, I want this heart of mine to be yours. I want you to settle down here and be fully at home. I want you to use it as your own. Let me show you around and point out some of the features of the home so that you will be more comfortable. I want you to enjoy our time together.” He was glad to come and seemed delighted to be given a place in my ordinary little heart. The following Bible studies reflect the journey we went on together.
THEME: Total Commitment.
TOPIC: The Recreation Room.
TEXTS: John 2:1-11
AIMS: i) To being a Christian does not mean leading a life of no fun,
ii) It does mean that our entertainment must be brought under Christ’s Lordship,
iii) To make an effort to involve yourself in fun activities that will also please the Lord and to cut out those that are not pleasing to him.
Study Four: One evening when I was on my way out with some of my buddies for a night on the town, Jesus was at the door and stopped me with a glance. “Are you going out?
I answered, “Yes.”
“Good,” He said, “I would like to go with you.”
“Oh,” I replied rather awkwardly. “I don’t think, Lord, that you would really enjoy where we are going. Let’s go out together tomorrow night. We can go to a Bible class or a social at the church, but tonight I have another engagement.”
“As you wish,” was his comment. “Only I thought when I came into your home we were going to do everything together – be close companions!”
22nd April Leader: 7.30 - Dr. C.O. Kolade
10.00 - Mrs. Remi Akinmade
That evening I spend some miserable hours. What kind of friend was I to Jesus? Deliberately leaving him out of part of my life, doing things and going places that I knew very well he would not enjoy? When I returned that evening, there was a light in his room, and I went up to talk it over with him. I acknowledged, “Lord, I know now I can’t have a good time if you are not along. From now on we will do everything together!”
Then we went down together into the recreation room of the house. He transformed it. He brought new friendships, new excitement, new joys. Laughter and music have been ringing in the house ever since. With a twinkle in his eye, he smiled. “You thought that with me around you wouldn’t have much fun, didn’t you? Remember, I have come ‘that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete’” (John 15:11).
Where do you go or what do you do for entertainment that you would prefer not to take Christ along? Some possibilities:
- my own recreation room (because of what I do or watch there)
- certain home or business
- places where I know I’ll meet certain people
- exclusive parties
How might some forms of entertainment be unwise for a Christian, even though they are legal and don’t tempt you toward gross immorality?
Read John 2:1-11
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
“Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kinds used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water” so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, thought the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guest have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
1. Describe what this wedding was like.
2. What does Jesus’ presence at the wedding day say about how people regarded him?
3. When Jesus’ mother told him about the lack of wine, what do you think caused him to decide to provide more wine?
What reasons would he have had to ignore the problem?
4. Of the people present, who would have known it was Jesus who had made the wine out of water? What does this tell you about his reasons for making the wine?
5. How does this story reveal Jesus’ interest in people celebrating and enjoying themselves together?
6. The master of the banquet said, “You have saved the best till now.” What does this tell you about
Jesus’ attitude towards the pleasures in your life?
- Which of your recreational activities can you invite Jesus to share and enjoy with you?
- What changes do you think Jesus would want to make in the recreation room of your heart?

JESUS: THE RESURRECTION
AND THE LIFE. Text: I am the Resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me even if he dies, will live. And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. (John 11:25-26). Resurrection is prominent in the Gospel according to St. John, He portrays Resurrection as a present, spiritual reality and a future eschatological event. The dead will be raised to eternal life. Also from the passage quoted above it implies that resurrection life can now be experienced in part. This Jesus underscored at the death of Lazarus. (John 11:25-26).
The Resurrection life is a present reality of life in the son (John 5:25-26) whereas the Resurrection of the body is a future promise awaiting fulfillment John also connects the believers bodily resurrection to the reality of Jesus’ bodily resurrection. (John 20:17). The concept of Resurrection was pivotal to the early church, The Message of the Apostles was closely tied to the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 3:14) Because of Jesus’ resurrection the apostles were able to do mighty works Acts 4:10.
The persistent witness to the resurrection of Jesus and the promise of the believers’ resurrection produced hostility, opposition and persecution. (Acts 4:1-21, 5:29-32, 23:6) Apostle Paul teaches that the resurrection is a supernatural act of God and the goal of salvation (Eph. 1:14) Christ will descend with all believers who have died, the immaterial will be united with the material and souls will be joined to resurrected glorified bodies (I Thess. 4:13-18) The Resurrection will provide a resurrection body suitable for life in the consummated kingdom of God (I Cor. 15:35,56)
For Paul the Resurrection was of paramount importance that to deny the resurrection
of believers was essentially to deny the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, believers had no hope and the faith is vain. (I Cor. 15:12-34) To deny the reality of Resurrection or to teach that resurrection had already occurred was destructive of the faith (2 Tim. 2:17-18).
The Resurrection of the body reproclaims the Edenic pronouncement of the goodness of creation (Gen. 1:31) and underscores the importance of the body in the purpose of God. The nature of the Resurrection remains somewhat mysterious. Some aspects, such as personal identity, carry over to the resurrected state. However life in a Resurrected Body will be different from that previously known.
“ For we know that if our earthly house,
A tent, is destroyed, we have a building
From God, a house not made with hands, Eternal in the heavens (2 Cor. 5:1). My prayer today and always is that we shall not miss Christ’s eternal home in Jesus name. Happy Sunday.
