  1. God visits Mamre for ___________ (Gen 18)


    1. The ________3 Visitors show up at Abraham’s tent

      1. The Trinity? Jesus & HS in the flesh? Not likely…

      2. Special Angels of God? Angels don’t have “decision” power…

      3. God & Angels? God the Father, 2 angelic beings…

    2. The ________ – Promise

      1. Notice Abraham: “Don’t pass me by… accept my offering”

      2. LORD: “Where is your wife Sarah” – in the tent. (This was for Sarah!)

      3. LORD: “I will return in 1 year… and you will have a son”

        1. Sarah’s reaction – ‘doubt’ – laughter & sarcasm

        2. Lord chastises Sarah … confirms it with Abraham

        3. “Is anything too hard for the Lord”

    3. The ________ – Cleanse the land of sin

      1. LORD: “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do”

        1. Sometimes God exposes the plan … sometimes not

        2. Leaders are often given a glimpse of God’s plan …

      2. God goes to investigate the sin of Sodom … sin has reached its fullness!

      3. Abe begins negotiations – 6x (50, 45, 40, 30, 20, 10) … what about 1?




  1. God visits Sodom for ___________ (Gen 19)

    1. The Sin of homosexual rape - a devastating sin in the city

      1. Two angels arrive – Lot is in the gateway (one of the leaders)

        1. Lot offers hospitality .. the rest of the town waited in ambush
      2. Text is a key controversy in dealing with homosexuality & Christians!


      3. Homosexuality – is it a sin? Yes. (see Lev 18:22, 20:13, Rom 1:26-27, 1Cor 6:9-10, 1Tim 1:8-10, 2Pet 2:6-8, Jude 7)

      4. Notice how a sin lifestyle can influence all of our behavior

        1. Some teach the sin was a lack of hospitality – Ezek 16:49

        2. Lot offers daughters – a poor reaction, sets up for future failure

        3. Spiritual blindness – don’t recognize angels of God (v. Abe/Lot)

    2. The Rescue

      1. Blinded the eyes of the men (spiritually blind become phys. blind)

      2. Angels led Lot & family out of the village

      3. Accepted the ‘bargain’ to stop at Zoar (limited the region of punishment)

      4. Destroyed the city – fire, smoke, ash (volcanic evidence)

    3. The Results

      1. Lost _______ – all up in smoke (ours will be too someday)

      2. Lost _______ – turned into “salt flats” – she lingered and stayed back

      3. Lost _______ – sons-in-law, debate over 2 or 4 daughters

      4. Lost _______ – daughters plot a scheme… become pregnant, 2 nations

        1. Moabites – curse on Israel via Balaam

        2. Ammonites – allies become enemies

      5. Lost _______ – short term solution with long term consequences




  1. God visits Abimelech for ___________ (Gen 20)

    1. Abraham moved on … possibly due to Sodom, possibly b/c of Lot
    2. Here we go again… same deception, different family


      1. Abimelech = “my father is king” – a family of kings

      2. Abraham – “she is my sister” (and she’s pregnant?!?)

NOTE: A sin once committed is not difficult to repeat!!!

    1. God appears to Abimelech

      1. God’s Msg: Give her up, or you’re a dead man

      2. Confrontation: What are you doing… why do this (explained v11-13)

      3. Healing & forgiveness – Abraham accepts offering, prays for Abimelech




  1. God visits Hagar for _________________ (Gen 21)

    1. Sarah has a child – FINALLY, the PROMISE HAS ARRIVED!!!

      1. Born right on time, as promised, by the grace of God

      2. Named Isaac – as God instructed … laughter every day!

      3. Circumcised on the 8th day – as God commanded

    2. Hagar is sent away

      1. More conflict, now between Ishmael & Isaac … still going on!

      2. God instructs Abraham to send them away – hardest act of loving parent

        1. Offspring reckoned through Isaac --- JESUS!!!

      3. Hagar tries to survive on their own… prepares to die – God shows up!

        1. What’s the matter? – don’t you remember the last time we met?

        2. Don’t be afraid – fear makes us stop moving forward

        3. I heard you – The ‘God Who Sees’ … also hears!

        4. Trust me – As you’ve seen in Abraham, so will you see again

      4. Hagar supports Ishmael as a single mom--don’t give up, ladies!


        1. Lived in the desert – may be tough, but we’ll make it!

        2. Became an archer – developed a skill to survive/thrive

        3. Got him a wife – became a grandmother!!!


  1. God visits Abraham for ___________ (Gen 22)

    1. Temptations v. Tests – Temptations are from Satan to make us sin, Testing is from God to grow our faith (Deut 8:16, Job 23:10, 1Pet 1:6-7)

    2. Faith is forged in dealing with the tensions of life

      1. Child of _______ – Isaac was the covenant child, but…

      2. Commandment of _______ – He was commanded to die

    3. Abraham is tested – will you trust me all the way?

      1. Great deal of emotion & pain … this is not a logical choice

      2. Response is immediate obedience – actions & words (vv 5, 8 – WE)

      3. Believed in God’s ability to do BOTH – Heb 11:17-19

    4. God intercedes

      1. Testing results in divine provision – God comes through!

      2. Abraham’s faith put him into a position to see God at work

        1. _______ – God is perfect

        2. _______God is already working, preparing, completing

        3. _______ – Don’t know the ‘what’… but we know the ‘who’!

    5. A “type” or forecast God’s plan through Jesus

      1. Isaac: Child of Promise becomes the Commandment of Death

      2. Abraham: The Father offered a sacrifice of his own son


      3. Moriah: possibly same location as David (2Sam xx) & Jesus (Lk 22)

      4. Abraham/Isaac: Faith in the Father to resurrect us from death

    1. Only woman in the Bible who’s age at death is recorded! She is important!

    2. Her legacy: 1st Mother to promised nation, 1st resident of “Israel”

      1. Big emphasis is on the location – Canaan

      2. Cost of the land was more than a laborer would make in a lifetime

      3. Abraham buys the land from a pagan – pays for the promised land?!?

      4. Buy vs. Gift – gift would have returned to owner after Abraham’s death

      5. This becomes the first property owned by Israelites

    3. Cave of Burial: Sarah, Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Leah all there!
