This Week- The Gingerbread Boy is a fun story that has many different variations. The children have absolutely loved the story and singing the phrase, “run run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man”! The children have heard the story in many different mediums…books, CD story, movies, songs, videos and even acting it out using props during center time. We made a class book about the story to add another element of print. The teachers will put it together and we will start the rounds home in everyone’s backpack to read and enjoy. We think we may have even spotted the gingerbread man in the hall running away. If we see him, we need to remind him to be safe and use his “walking feet”. 

Next Week- We will continue our theme of the Gingerbread Boy. We will read a few other versions of the story and compare and contrast the differences. Other variations we will touch upon include a gingerbread girl, a gingerbread man and different animals. Using photos and pictures we will read and compare things that are the same and/or different in the different versions of the story. Another fun activity will target identifying first names as a whole as well as the letters in our names. Each friend will be giving a “gingerbread card” with their name on it. We will take turns using flash cards with letters to see who has what letters in their name. This is a great way to continue to work on name and letter recognition with a gingerbread twist! Number identification, counting, finger strength and working together will be the theme of our Clothes Pin counting on Thursday. Friends will target all these skills by clipping clothes pins on giant gingerbread cut outs.

Please Label Clothing

As it is the time of year for warm coats, hats and mittens, please take a moment to label your child’s clothing. We have over 100 students twice a day here at Jefferson. That is a lot of hats and mittens!! So that we can return items that are lost, please take a moment to label your child’s items. It helps us so much!! Although we have not had much snow yet, just a reminder that we will not go out to play when there is snow (unless a snow play day note is sent home). Therefore your child does not need to wear boots and snow pants each day. Our walks and driveways are shoveled and kept free of snow. Thank you for your understanding. 

Holiday Program

Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 18, 2014. At 11:00 and 2:45 we will have a simple Holiday party in our classroom. The children will have a few songs to sing and then there will be a simple craft for you to complete with your child. A simple snack will be available as well. Please watch for a RSVP and return it if you have not done so. If there are any special holidays/celebrations at your house that you would like to come in a share during the month of December, please do not hesitate to let me know. 

Pajama Day

On Friday, December 19th, the last day before winter break, we will have a fun pajama day. Your child is invited to wear appropriate pajamas to school. If your child would like, they may put slippers in their backpack and change into them once in the building. Wearing pajamas is totally optional. Some children feel uncomfortable wearing pajamas to school and that is okay! We will have a relaxed day and enjoy each other’s company before the long winter break.

Favorite Apps

Although I try to find free apps, I found a cute gingerbread story for $.99. It is by Read and Record apps. It is a fun version that has the great catch phrase “Run run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread Man”! Simply type The Gingerbread Man by Read and Record into the search box at the app store.
