June 15, 2012: Burbank, CA: Today at 4:15pm EST Wichita-son and Squarian captain XV will release his Popular Culture mixtape on Livemixtapes. Featuring his take on some of the biggest songs of today such as Kendrick Lamar’s “The Recipe” (“Stone Cold”) and Ca$h Out’s “Cashin’ Out” (“Tappin’ Out”), XV will also include original workings that play on his quick wit and unapologetic penchant for being socially awkward as evidenced in the recently leaked “Be There, Be Square” and “AaaHH! Real Monsters” featuring ScHoolBoy Q. The mixtape can be downloaded in its entirety at http://www.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/17538/xv_popular_culture.html.
With the release of the mixtape, Squarians will be able to pre-order The Awesome EP on the same date at http://xv.warnerreprise.com. “I haven’t released anything for purchase since 2006 where I was independently selling albums out of my backpack,” says XV. “But even then, I’ve never released anything with a barcode. I wanted to create a project that brings in all the core fans and all the new fans I’ve gained. It’s an awesome EP that is pre-gaming everybody for the debut.”
Tracklisting for The Awesome EP which will be available for purchase on iTunes later this month on June 26th is as follows:
An avid gamer, comic book fan, and self-described “recovering porn addict,” the MC’s title track was most recently featured in Verizon’s national campaign for the HTC Rezound with Beats Audio and used in the popular gaming franchise NBA 2K12: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UISxPMd56Is.
Following a successful run at this year’s SXSW, XV hit the road on his “Midwest State of Mind” and “The L7 Tour” in the Northeast selling out a number of venues despite a proper single including a great showing at New York’s Webster Hall. “I’ve done enough shows but New York was a great feeling and like no other,” reveals XV. “It was great to see people lining up for me and in the front row singing my music. That doesn’t really happen as an opener.”
Upon the release of the two projects, XV will enter self-imposed exile to begin the recording process of his debut album The Kid with the Greenback which will be helmed by Just Blaze. Speaking in a candid interview with The Source, XV revealed “I’m trying to create that classic sound which is soul based. I’m bringing him all the samples because I know he’s a genius at that. We share a lot of passions and I want to take a bunch of those awesome things and put them in my debut album.”
Named for the age he decided to make a career out of hip-hop, XV has released almost 20 mixtapes since 2006, including the ambitious 2008 40 Days / 40 Nights where he released a collection of 80 freestyles and original songs. In 2009 he released his DJ Enuff-hosted Everybody’s Nobody mixtape which prompted a signing by Warner Bros. Records. But it was last year’s sleeper Zero Heroes that garnered the MC critical acclaim while being featured on a number of “Best Of 2011” lists and prompted a well-received appearance in BET’s Hip Hop Awards Cypher.
