Kangla Fort is proposed to be developed into the Kangla Fort Heritage Park. Kangla is located at the heart of the city and covers an area of 237.62 acres. Kangla is a wonderful synthesis of unique cultural resources, which include the Manipuri and British periods. Diversity of the two resources ranges from architectural, archaeological, natural and sacred. The Fort exemplifies bravery and sacrifices of Manipuris and witnessed many of battles British authorities who wanted to capture and conquer the state. The Fort is presently managed by the Kangla Fort Board under the presidentship of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur.
Restoration (conservation) & reconstruction and Development of important Historical monuments – Ruins of Citadel, ruins of Kangla Uttra, Govindaji Temple, Beithab, Old Brick Temple of Brindabanchandra, etc. The conservation work will take place after preparing proper conservation plan by professionally qualified conservation architects.
Development of important sacred places and water bodies such as Nungjeng Phukri (lake), nunggoibi, Manglen, Kangla Mein Surung, lainingthou Wangbaren, Lainingthou Marjing, Lainingthou thangjing, Lainingthou Koubru, Manung Kangjeibung (Inner polo ground).
For other sacred sites, proper delineation of site and providing information signage of its importance and dos and don’t’s.
To develop gardens around holy places
Reusing of important /beautiful European type buildings/bungalows as museums & offices.
Conversion of residences and bungalows of the British officers into heritage hotel/resort
Creation of a large cultural centre to showcase the rich dance (Manipur dance or Ras Leela, Pung Cholom, Nupa Pala, etc) and music form of arts of Manipur. Conducting regular performances of Manipuri and other dances and music. Construction of two auditoria for regular performances of Manipuri dance and other local dances and music
‘Thang Ta & Sarit Sarak’ is a popular Manipuri martial art. To show case this to tourists, a dedicatedgallery for martial arts of Manipuri is created and regular shows of this martial art is performed.
Establish institute of Manipuri Dance covering teaching of dance at various levels, research on the dance, arranging of lectures by eminent personalities in the field, establishing a library on the dance with historical evidences, etc.
Plantation of trees specially medicinal plants and indigenous trees;
To convert open spaces in Kangla as recreational Centre (landscaped parks, children play areas, etc.) since Imphal city does not have any big park;
To construct replicas of houses of different ethnic groups of Manipur within the fort area.
