  • The YouTube video of the book being read: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUgidl9wEZ0

  • Or…the book itself: Have You Filled a Bucket Today? http://www.amazon.com/Have-You-Filled-Bucket-Today/dp/1933916168/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348759857&sr=8-1&keywords=have+you+filled+a+bucket+today%3F

  • 2 buckets labeled: “Bucket Dippers” and “Bucket Fillers”

  • Print the resource Bucket Game on cardstock and cut apart the phrases that dip or fill.

LESSON:

Read the book or watch the YouTube video of Have You Filled a Bucket Today being read.

Tie it into the story of the early church…

1 Thessalonians 5:22 says “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” The Christians living in Thessalonica needed encouragement as they missed Jesus living on earth and were fearful of the future. Paul wrote a letter to them, and in the letter reminded them that they needed to stick together and encourage and build up each other.

Play the song “Encourage One Another” by Steve Green. The children will be able to sing along pretty quickly, but it is also a good song for instruments. (I just bought the MP3 on Amazon and burned it to a CD): http://www.amazon.com/Encourage-One-Another-Thessalonians-11/dp/B000THIHJK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352232145&sr=8-1&keywords=encourage+one+another+steve+green

Play a bucket game:

  • Print out the phrases that dip or fill from the resource “Bucket Game” and cut them apart. Label 2 buckets with “Bucket Dippers” and “Bucket Fillers”. Both buckets should be at the end of a classroom or hallway. Put the “dipper” bucket in a tipped over position.

  • Divide the kids into teams (5-8 on a team)

  • Have a relay where kids draw one of the cards, and run down a hallway or through a classroom to put the phrase in the right bucket.

  • Encourage the teams to encourage each other. When you are done, double check the buckets together, giving a thumbs up for each “Bucket Filler” and a thumbs down for each “Bucket Dipper”
