The Governor’s Latino Advisory Commission will hold two more free public hearings for the Latino community to identify challenges and significant issues related to Hispanic business in the Commonwealth. Information collected by the Commission's Business Issues Committee will be part of the Commission's final report due to the Governor in September.

The public hearing focusing on Latino business issues will be held Thursday, June 10, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (10700 Midlothian Turnpike, Suite 200, Richmond).

The Business Issues Committee is looking to explore ways to ensure that minority vendors are able to bid for state contracts and that the state has easier and greater access to these vendors, to help the state provide more business resources and support to Latino businesses to help them be successful in today's market, and to open import/export opportunities between Virginia and Latin American countries.

1.

Serve:  We provide practical, necessary, and quality community services to improve the living conditions of Hispanics in Hawaii.

2.

Educate:  We promote Hispanic culture and traditions, while understanding and appreciating our adopted home, and the society that welcomed us.

3.

Advocate:  We serve as the voice for the community in matters where advocacy ensures fair and equitable treatment.  We facilitate communication with comparable organizations on the Mainland and around the globe (in person and on the internet).

Objectives

With it's one-stop shopping format, it serves a wide range of individuals, groups and private/public sector agencies, who can now easily obtain the information and resources they need.

The Hispanic Center of Hawaii operates a resource and referral center comprised of two departments:
Community Advocacy Department  and Arts & Culture Department
Commty Advocacy

As community advocates, we provide the following services:

1.   Bilingual notary

2.   Bilingual letter-writing

3.   Bilingual translation and interpreter

4.   Americans w/Diabetes Act workshops

5.  Statewide database of community organizations, recommended Spanish-speaking professionals, bilingual materials on locally available community services ie; Spouse/child abuse, job referrals, English-As-A-Second Language, voter registration, scholarship information, human & civil rights, immigration issues, etc.
Centro Hispano de Hawaii is the only Hispanic agency of its kind in Hawaii, created in 1998 by four outstanding community leaders, Nancy Ortiz, Jose Villa, Martha Sanchez & Mary Lou Brown, Centro Hispano de Hawaii continues to serve the community as a Non-Profit agency, committed to connecting those that need help with those who provide help, in their own language.
With the U.S. Census Report 2002, confirming what Hispanics in Hawaii already knew to be true, that Hispanics in Hawaii numbered well over 100,000 (not counting our military personnel who reside here as well) and that there were no resources in place to serve this community.
From this need to serve, was born the idea and now 4 years later, we are still helping our Hispanics, and our communities.

Our Arts & Culture department keeps pretty busy promoting and coordinating Hispanic events / projects within Hawaii as well as events / projects coming to Hawaii.  This department also has a statewide database of local Hispanic entertainers, musicians and organization.  In addition, our Arts & Cultural department promotes and coordinates Hawaii-based events / projects going to the Mainland, or another country to represent Hawaii's Hispanic cultures.
