CAROE, MARTIN BRAGG 1933-99 Vann, Godalming, Surrey. Succeeded father ADR Caroe at St Davids Cathedral, firm was called ?aroe & Martin (C&M) at 1984 quinquennial but generally Caroe & Partners (C&P). Peter Bird took over from Martin Caroe before 1990 quinquennial. Partner with Christian’s cousin JH Christian (+1901) & Purday (who des Mombasa Cathedral 1904), they did The Paddock, Leopardstown, 1885; Hanover Schools, Mayfair exh RA 1889. Senior archt to Eccl Comms 1895-1938. Cathedral architect Saint Davids after JO Scott, extensive works in St Davids diocese; also in charge of Canterbury, Durham, Southwell, Brecon, Malvern, Romsey, & Tewkesbury. Firm was Caroe & Passmore (C&P) from 1903 (Herbert Passmore 1868-1966) and was joined in 1930s by son Alban DR Caroe. Died in house in Kyrenia, Cyprus he had designed. 1911 Fittings for Caldey Abbey church: list of works made by Clarke of Llandaff.: Abbots chair, litany desk, two acolyte stools, clock case and two stove cases: ?mostly burnt in 1940, some previously removed to Prinknash. Phil Thomas lists: lectern, canopied stalls, abbot’s throne, sedilia, hanging lamps, screen and gallery as by JCC; lectern now at Farnborough Abbey.
