Activate/Build Prior Knowledge:

We give great respect to our flag. It represents our country. Do you know who is given credit for making the first flag? This book is about Betsy Ross. She is credited with designing and making the first American Flag. The time is set in the American Revolutionary period. Many people wanted a symbol that would unite the colonies. Betsy was asked by George Washington to make the flag. That way all of the colonies would feel united. We still use the flag to unite us. When and where do you see the flag? We fly the flag at ball games, schools and government offices. We also fly the flag at businesses and sometimes homes. We pledge the flag. The flag is the symbol of our country. When we honor our flag we are saying we honor our country. Let’s find out how our flag came into being. First however, lets read the author’s note at the end of the book. Notice that the author has told how his research came to be. Notice that he acknowledges that there may be other versions of how the flag was made.
