Introduce story context:


1-2 minutes

Tomorrow we’re going to read a story about a family that is on its way to the farm. Have you ever been to a farm? What kinds of things do you think you might do if you visit a farm?

Word Introduction:

1-2 minutes


Here are some words we will read in tomorrow’s story.

Touch the word, say it, have students repeat. Use the same procedure with remaining words.

 Call on individual children randomly to read the words independently.


Introduce word meanings:

5-10 minutes

Touch and read the sentence with the students: 1. Barb was in the lead when dad said, “Pop’s farm is just past the next road.”



In the lead means to be ahead of someone else. For example, if you were playing a game of cards the person who was winning the game would be in the lead.

Touch and read the sentence with the students: 2. The weeks sped by.


Sped means that something moved very fast. In this sentence it means that time moved fast. I’m going to name some things. Tell me if they could move fast:
Snail

Train

Minutes

Days



Touch and read the sentence with the students: 3. Pop was not as weak has he had been.


When someone is weak it means that they are not very strong. Would you be weak if you couldn’t pick up:
A feather?

A truck?

A pillow?


 Correction Procedure: If students make an error, stop them, model the word and have them read it again.
