12.1 The Meaning of Repudiation (الإعراض) and the Types of Renouncing the Religion of Allah:
a) The Meaning of Renouncing the Religion of Allah the All Exalted:

Know dear brother student—may Allah bless you and I—that the meaning of renouncing the religion of Allah the All Exalted is to oppose and leave it and to consider worthless for mankind in their lives and deaths. It could be the necessary result of arrogance and disdain in answering the call of truth. It could be by preferring human laws over it and claiming that there exists laws and systems better than the religion of Allah the All Exalted which was brought by the Message of Islam and communicated by the Messenger to mankind Muhammad PBUH. The primary consideration in the repudiation of the religion of Allah the All Exalted is disdain in the heart and believing that it is irrelevant to contemporary civilization—as is claimed by the modernists, communists and nationalists along with the atheists. It is also a condition in the repudiation of the religion of Allah the All Exalted that it is complete repudiation, i.e.: of all of religion o that which Islam is not Islam without it to the effect they he does not venture to learn it or enact upon it. We notice that repudiation of the religion of Allah the All Exalted manifests itself in complete rejection of its imitation. This was the case of the courageous among the Quraysh from whom the seal of the Prophets Muhammad ibn Abd Allah PBUH was sent and revelation was revealed intheir midst. The witnessed the signs and warnings but did not believe in the Message nor did they believe in the seal of the Prophets but completely renounced the religion of Allah the All Exalted and stood as obstacles in the face of the invitation obstinately rejecting it like Abi Jahl, Abi Lahab and Umayyah ibn Khalf and their like.
b) Those the Renounce the religion of Allah the All Exalted are of different Types:
As for those who renounce the religion of Allah the All Exalted and refuse to learn it, they are two groups:

a) Knowingly renounce.

b) Ignorantly renounce.

Dr Hasan al-Awaaji says: “As for the knowledgeable his repudiation is result of arrogance and haughtiness to accepting the truth. This we rule with kufr when certain conditions are met and preventions removed; except that the repudiator if being from those who have outwardly shown their Islam the texts dealing with repudiation of the remembrance of Allah can possible be read as him meriting a promised punishment. If Allah knows that he conceals kufr and manifests Islam. If Allah considers him to be a disbeliever and if people judge him to be outwardly Muslim and if he enjoys some origins of belief with his disobedience and preference of desires and want of the hereafter; he is treated according to the measure of his commitment to Islam and iman and the measure of his association with kufr and disobedience. As for the ignorant, if he is ignorant of the principles of religion the message not having reached him he is then not commissioned until the invitation (to Islam) has reached him and he is considered to be a person of the time by many of the knowledgeable. If he is ignorant and imitates his community’s observance of kufr doing what they do and leaving what they leave not contemplating nor searching for understanding, then for such a person there is no excuse. When the conditions of kufr are realised and the preventions expelled he is judged with disbelief. If being an ignorant Muslim renouncing parts of Quran and Sunnah due to his ignorance of their content and entertaining his desires incapable of asking questions and seeking knowledge and immature then he is not considered out of the religion in so long as he persists in such a state. He should however be scared with the promise of punishment by those verses treating the repudiation of the religion of Allah the All Exalted.” Here ends his remarks.

Sheikh Atiyyah Muhammad Saalim-may Allah show him mercy-says in his explanation of the warning of the repudiators and objectors of the religion of Allah the All Exalted: “Let us stop at the end of this exhibition so that we may take away two things:

Firstly: to be aware and cautious of those who have sold their religion for this world and their guidance for error and have knowingly sought the gates of hell so that they may cause turmoil in our religion as is found in the words of Allah the All Exalted:

(4) Women

44. Hast thou not turned Thy vision to those who were given a portion of the Book? they traffic in error, and wish that ye should lose the right path.

45. But Allah hath full knowledge of your enemies: Allah is enough for a protector, and Allah is enough for a Helper.
They want Muslims to go astray. Its equal is found in the words of Allah the All Exalted:
{مَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَلا الْمُشْرِكِينَ أَنْ يُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ} [البقرة:105]

(2) The Cow 105. It is never the wish of those without Faith among the People of the Book, nor of the Pagans, that anything good should come down to you from your Lord.

With Allah the All Glorious being solely characterized with being merciful to whomsoever He pleases they try to make Muslims disbelievers due to their envy as Allah the All Exalted says:

{وَدَّ كَثِيرٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَوْ يَرُدُّونَكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ إِيمَانِكُمْ كُفَّاراً حَسَداً مِنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِهِمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الْحَقُّ} [البقرة:109]

(2) The Cow 109. Quite a number of the People of the Book wish they could Turn you (people) back to infidelity after ye have believed, from selfish envy, after the Truth hath become Manifest unto them.

And as Allah the All Exalted says to His Messenger PBUH:

{وَاحْذَرْهُمْ أَنْ يَفْتِنُوكَ عَنْ بَعْضِ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ} [المائدة:49]

(5) The Food 49. But beware of them lest they beguile thee from any of that (teaching) which Allah hath sent down to thee.
This is from the perspective of being cautious of the people of the book.
The Second Matter: being cautious of those whom the devil has deceived so that they perform deeds similar to the deeds of the other (the people of the book) and by doing so are likened to them. To them a punishment is promised like that of the punishment promised to the other.” Here ends his remarks.
c) Types of Repudiating the Religion of Allah the All Exalted:

If we look into the circumstances of those repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted. We notice that the primary cause for their repudiation of the religion of Allah the All Exalted can be traced to two factors:

The First Type: repudiation that egresses out of the religion, like whosoever intentionally repudiates the religion of Allah the All Exalted not teaching it, learning it or enacting upon it.

The Second Type: repudiation that does not egress out of the religion, like repudiation due to incapability to ask questions and seek knowledge with his love for truth and guidance. This type of repudiation, even if not resulting in egression out of the religion, causes such a person is sinful and is promised numerous punishments according to numerous texts.

Dr Hasan al-Awaaji says whilst speaking on they types of repudiation: “According to this repudiation is of twp types:

Firstly: that which egresses out of the religion which is repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted not learning it or enacting upon it. This repudiator has no desire to learn relgion nor does he consider anything other than what he believes but rather is satisfied with his disbelief in and association with Allah.

Secondly: that which does not egress out of the religion: and this is repudiation due to incapability of asking question and seeking knowledge that enables action and understanding although willing to and loving it but he is simply incapable of it. It is not because he is not mature. Learning religion does not mean the learning the smallest details of belief in Allah and His Messenger or details of that Allah and His Messenger have legally prescribed, but what it means is to learn the general meaning of belief.” Here ends his remarks.
Therefore it is sufficient to learn what generally renders iman correct just as a person would enter Islam and some legislation was yet to be revealed so he is commanded to observe what has already been revealed and commanded and is not commanded to observe the remaining legal injunctions. Similar is the Muslim who is not asked to become acquainted with the details of belief and its laws. Although knowledge of it constitutes learning religion and is required except that the poet has avoided it and his avoidance of it and satisfaction with only the minimum of what constitutes correct belief does not egress him out of Islam nor does it slander his conviction. It is not considered an annulment of iman unlike the intentional repudiation and obstruction of learning along with not caring about understanding the religion and knowing that which constitutes correct iman. This matter upon which we are discussing and that which is incumbent upon Muslims to know and not be ignorant of from matters of iman in order than he may not repudiate the religion of Allah the All Exalted is called by the scholars that which is known from religion necessarily.

12.2 The Warning of Quran and Sunnah Regarding this Annulment:
a) The Quranic Warning of the Annulment:
You should know, dear brother student, that the Noble Quran has given importance to explaining the circumstances of the repudiators of the religion of Allah the All Exalted. Quranic verses have focused on warning of the repudiation and denial of the religion of Allah the All Exalted. This repudiation could possible egress a person from the religion of Islam—may Allah the All Exalted protect us—among the verses cautioning repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted:

{وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَنْ ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنْكاً} [طه:124]

(20) Ta Ha 124. "But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him is a life narrowed down.

A restricted life is constriction caused by repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted. Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqeeti-may Allah show him mercy-comments on the meaning of the verse: “It means that Allah the All Exalted has attached to religion submission, conviction, dependence upon Allah and to be satisfied with His allocation which the person spend from Allah’s bounty with pleasure and ease. By this he lives a comfortable life. This is evidenced by the words of Allah the All Exalted:

{مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحاً مِنْ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَى وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً} [النحل:97]

(16) The Bee 97. Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has Faith, verily, to him will We give a new Life, a life that is good and pure.

(2) The Cow 61. They were covered with humiliation and misery; they drew on themselves the wrath of Allah. This because they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah.

This is a miserable life caused by repudiating the remembrance of Allah. Quran explains elsewhere that if they desisted from repudiating the remembrance of Allah, Allah would give them an expansive and easy life not a miserable one, as Allah the All Exalted says:

{وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ أَقَامُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالأِنْجِيلَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْهِمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ لأَكَلُوا مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِنْ تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِهِمْ} [المائدة:66]

(5) The Food 66. If only they had stood fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that was sent to them from their Lord, they would have enjoyed happiness from every side.
In addition to other verses of the Quran.” Here ends his remarks.

2- Allah the All Exalted says:

{فَإِنْ أَعْرَضُوا فَقُلْ أَنْذَرْتُكُمْ صَاعِقَةً مِثْلَ صَاعِقَةِ عَادٍ وَثَمُودَ} [فصلت:13]

(41) Revelations Well Expounded 13. But if they turn away, say thou: "I have warned you of a stunning Punishment (as of thunder and lightning) like that which (overtook) the 'Ad and the Thamud!"

Imam Ibn Katheer-may Allah show him mercy-says on the exegesis of this verse: “Allah the All Exalted says: say oh Muhammad to the polytheists and fabricators of what has reached them from truth, if you repudiate what has reached you from Allah the All Exalted I warn of Allah’s punishment as took place to nations before you who slandered the Messengers.” Here ends his remarks.

3- Allah the All Exalted says:

{وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ ذُكِّرَ بِآياتِ رَبِّهِ ثُمَّ أَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا إِنَّا مِنَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ مُنْتَقِمُونَ} [السجدة:22]

(32) The Adoration 22. And who does more wrong than one to whom are recited the Signs of his Lord, and who then turns away therefrom? Verily from those who transgress We shall exact (due) Retribution.
Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di-may Allah show him mercy-says regarding the exegesis of this verse: “i.e.: nobody is more oppressive and none greater in enmity than those who have been reminded of their Lord’s signs which their Lord sent them lest they be educated and His blessing be completed on the hands of His Messengers ordering and reminding them of the beneficial things of this world and the next and to warn him of the harms of this world and the next. These harms require that they are met with iman and submission, conformity and gratitude but the oppressive meet it with the opposite of what is expected not believing in it nor imitating it but repudiating it and leaving it behind them. They are the biggest criminals who deserve the severest punishment.” Here ends his remarks.
4- Allah the All Exalted says:

{وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ ذُكِّرَ بِآياتِ رَبِّهِ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا وَنَسِيَ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ} [الكهف:57]

(18) The Cave 57. And who doth more wrong than one who is reminded of the Signs of his Lord, but turns away from them, forgetting the (deeds) which his hands have sent forth?

Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di-may Allah show him mercy-says on the exegesis of this verse: “Allah the All Exalted informs us that there is no greater oppression or greater crime than a servant reminded of Allah’s signs, truth is distinguished from falsehood, guidance from error, he has been scared and preached to yet stills repudiates not remembering what he was reminded nor has he returned to what he once observed in addition to forgetting what sins his two hands have committed and is oblivious of the observation of the unseen. This is indeed a greater oppression from the repudiator whom the signs of Allah have not reached him nor has he been reminded of it. Although it remains a form of oppression it is a lesser form than this one because the disobedient is well aware and enjoys full knowledge and is unlike who doesn’t posses knowledge. Allah the All Exalted punishes him for his repudiation of His signs and his forgetting his sins along with his self satisfaction whilst in a state of evil of which he is fully aware of.” Here ends his remarks.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqeeti-may Allah show him mercy-explains the things he counts as the evil result and wicked ends caused by repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted saying: “What this gracious verse entails is that repudiating the remembrance of Allah’s signs is among the greatest oppressions which is added to elsewhere through the explanation of the evil results and wicked ends resultant from repudiation. Among these evil results is what has been mentioned here in that he is among the most wicked people, and among the evil results is that a veil is drawn over his heart so that he does not understand. He will never know guidance as Allah says after explaining these wicked ends:

{إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَنْ يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِي آذَانِهِمْ وَقْراً وَإِنْ تَدْعُهُمْ إِلَى الْهُدَى فَلَنْ يَهْتَدُوا إِذاً أَبَداً} [الكهف:57]

(18) The Cave 57Verily We have set veils over their hearts lest they should understand this, and over their ears, deafness, if thou callest them to guidance, even then will they never accept guidance.
Among the consequences is Allah’s retribution on those who repudiate His remembrance:

قال تعالى: {وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ ذُكِّرَ بِآياتِ رَبِّهِ ثُمَّ أَعْرَضَ عَنْهَا إِنَّا مِنَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ مُنْتَقِمُونَ} [السجدة:22]

(32) The Adoration 22. And who does more wrong than one to whom are recited the Signs of his Lord, and who then turns away therefrom? Verily from those who transgress We shall exact (due) Retribution.
That the repudiator is like a donkey:

قال تعالى: {فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ * كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُسْتَنْفِرَةٌ} [المدثر:49-50]

(74) The Clothed One

49. Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-

50. As if they were affrighted asses.

Warning of a treacherous storm like that inflicted upon Aad and Thamood:

{فَإِنْ أَعْرَضُوا فَقُلْ أَنْذَرْتُكُمْ صَاعِقَةً مِثْلَ صَاعِقَةِ عَادٍ وَثَمُودَ} [فصلت:13] الآية،

(41) Revelations Well Expounded 13. But if they turn away, say thou: "I have warned you of a stunning Punishment (as of thunder and lightning) like that which (overtook) the 'Ad and the Thamud!"
A miserable life lived in blindeness:

قال تعالى: {وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَنْ ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنْكاً} [طه:124].

(20) Ta Ha 124. "But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him is a life narrowed down.

A grievous punishment:

(72) The Jinn 17. But if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will cause him to undergo a severe Penalty.

Being counterparts comparable to devils:

{وَمَنْ يَعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَاناً فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ} [الزخرف:36]

(43) The Embellishment 36. If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of ((Allah)) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.
In addition to many more evil consequences and wicked ends resultant of repudiating the remembrance of Allah.” Here ends his remarks.
5- Allah the All Exalted says:

{فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ * كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُسْتَنْفِرَةٌ * فَرَّتْ مِنْ قَسْوَرَةٍ} المدثر:49-51]

(74) The Clothed One

49. Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-

50. As if they were affrighted asses,

51. Fleeing from a lion!

Imam Ibn Katheer-may Allah show him mercy-says on the exegesis of this verse: “i.e.: what is the matter with those disbelievers before you, you invite them and remind them but they repudiate.

{كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُسْتَنْفِرَةٌ * فَرَّتْ مِنْ قَسْوَرَةٍ}

As if they were affrighted asses,

51. Fleeing from a lion

i.e.: it is like that whilst they are running away from the truth they are likened to a wild donkey that the hunter is aiming for whilst its fleeing from a lion.” Here ends his remarks.
6- Allah the All Exalted say:

{وَمَنْ يَعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَاناً فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ} [الزخرف:36]

(43) The Embellishment 36. If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of ((Allah)) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.
Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di-may Allah show him mercy- says on the exegesis of this verse: “Allah the All Exalted informs us of His grievous punishment for those who repudiate his remembrance saying: {وَمَنْ يَعْشُ} i.e. repudiate and obstruct, {عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَنِ} which is the Noble Quran which is the greatest blessing blessed by the Most Gracious upon His servants. Whosoever accepts it has accepted the best endowment and has won the greatest quest and achieved the highest desire. Whosoever repudiates and rejects it has unsuccessfully lost a loss that knows no happiness. Allah the All Exalted appoints a devil to be his guide, counterpart and friend, preparing, enticing and urging him to commit sin.” Here ends his remarks.

Sheikh Sa’di was then posses a question: whosoever is obscured the right path by the devil whilst believing that he is upon the path can he be excused?

The Sheikh replied: “There is no excuse, such a person whose cause of ignorance is repudiating the remembrance of Allah whilst being capable of being guided, he has rejected guidance whilst capable of it and engaged in falsehood. The sin is his and the crime his. This is the circumstance of repudiating the remembrance of Allah in this world with the possibility of its alternative which is waywardness and error and the truth turned upside down.” Here ends his remarks.

b) The Warning of Sunnah regarding Repudiating the Remembrance of Allah:

As for the warning of the Prophet PBUH in pure Sunnah a punishment for those repudiators is found in the Hadeeth of Abi waaqid al-Laythy ® that the Messenger of Allah PBUH whilst sitting in the Masjid with others wheh three people approached, two of them to the Messenger of Allah PBUH and one went elsewhere. He said: they both stood in front of the Messenger, one of them saw an opening in the chain therein he sat, the second sat behind him and the third turned to leave. When the Messenger of Allah PBUH left he said:

((ألا أخبركم عن النفر الثلاثة؟ أما أحدهم فآوى إلى الله فآواه الله، وأما الآخر فاستحيا من الله فاستحيى الله منه، وأما الآخر فأعرض عن الله، فأعرض الله عنه))
((Should I inform you of the three people? As for the first one he took refuge in Allah so Allah protected him, as for the second he was shy before Allah so Allah is shy of him, and as for the last he repudiated Allah so Allah rejected him.))

Narrated by both Imam Bukhari and Muslim.

Due to the repudiation committed by the person in the presence of the Messenger PBUH he has merited the mockery of Allah and absence of His grace. Al-Hafiz ibn Hajr-may Allah show him mercy-this is based on a Muslim repudiating without due reason he is then a hypocrite who the Prophet PBUH informs us of Allah’s mockery upon him and that this promised punishment is indeed something to be afraid of.
May Allah protect you and I from the repudiation of the religion of Allah and make you and I among the faithful and obedient and bless us with submission to Quran and Sunnah. Verily He is the Guardian and Powerful, all praise be to Allah Lord of the Worlds, and Allah’s praise upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Lesson Summary:
Dear Brother Student:

We can possibly summarise the primary factors inherent in this lesson into the following points:

  • It is clear to you that the meaning of repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted is to oppose and reject it and to consider it irrelevant to the life and death of mankind. It can take place as a necessary consequence of arrogance and impudence to the call of truth. It could take place by preferring human common laws over it and claiming that there exist laws and systems better than that of the religion of Allah the All Exalted brought by the Message of Islam conveyed by the Messenger to mankind Muhammad PBUH. The consideration for repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted is to negate it with ones heart and to believe it irrelevant for contemporary civilization. Similarly it has been explained to you that the repudiators of the religion of Allah the All Exalted and those who reject it learning are of two categories: conscious and ignorant repudiators.

  • As for the knowledgeable his repudiation is result of arrogance and haughtiness to accepting the truth. This we rule with kufr when certain conditions are met and preventions removed. As for the ignorant, if he is ignorant of the principles of religion the message not having reached him he is then not commissioned until the invitation (to Islam) has reached him and he is considered to be a person of the time. Repudiation is of twp types: repudiation that egresses out of the religion, and repudiation that does not egress out of the religion.

  • The Noble Quran has given much importance to the expalantion of the circumstances of those repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted.

Allah the All Exalted says:

Similarly you are aware that pure Sunnah has also cautioned against repudiating the religion of Allah the All Exalted.
