This activity is meant to be used after readingEdgar Allan Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum.” It is a JIGSAW activity in which each student has different roles in each group. The groups each explore different elements of the story and then present to each other.
This is a really fun activity to do with your students, but it is also a rigorous activity that really requires them to explore the text for deeper meaning.
The first page is the directions sheet to give to each student. Following that are the group assignments. Give one to each student to assign groups, themes, etc. The last page is the grading rubric.
“The Pit and the Pendulum”
You will be completing an activity called a jigsaw because each group will get a piece of the puzzle to present to the class. When all of the pieces are put together, you get the big picture.
Each person will have specific roles to complete the jigsaw, and then the group as a whole will receive a grade for their presentation. You may not read from the book or note cards – YOU HAVE TO LEARN THIS INFORMATION AND TALK ABOUT IT INTELLIGENTLY TO THE CLASS . From this story, you will put together a story-board to represent your section. You must include the following:
Plot - included the plot diagram
Emotion ______________ - include a passage from the text which explains how this emotion affects the story and a drawing of the emotion.
Theme _______________ - Write an explanation of how this theme is portrayed in the text. Use the text to support your explanation.
