Type of Work: Analysis Title of Work: “The White Umbrella” Analysis/Active Reading

First Nine Weeks Sample Reflection

I learn best by reading, looking at, and visualizing information. Therefore, when I study or do work I should take many notes and have someone at home write down new concepts that I need help understanding. As I look back at the work I have done in Language Arts for the First Nine Weeks, I notice that I have gotten better at writing and heightened my ability to make connections and critically think. I also notice that my vocabulary skills are improving.

Something specific I should do to be successful in school and in life is that when I receive an assignment that is due in over a week or so, I should get started on it the day I get it. That way I will not get a low grade. I really enjoyed analyzing and discussing the short stories because they helped me to strengthen my critical thinking, especially “The White Umbrella.” Discussing the stories helped me better understand them because the teacher explained the confusing parts.

This assignment is related to the Global Contexts, Identities and Relationships, because for this story, “The White Umbrella,” we discussed the protagonist’s attitude about herself, her culture, and her environment. We also, analyzed her relationship to other characters and how she learns a lesson at the end, which helps her to understand herself. This helped me better understand my personal values and what I care most about. I feel that these First Nine Weeks in Language Arts I really learned vocabulary, grammar, active reading and how to express myself better in writing. I will apply that in school and in the future. For example, I can use these skills throughout my school life to get good grades. In the future I can use these skills to better understand the world around me, to find a good job, and to succeed in that job.

The assignments and lessons in this class have helped me become knowledgeable. I have gained knowledge in vocabulary through using the maps that help me create sentences and make connections. In addition, the grammar notes, quizzes and writing exercises such as journals improved my skills. This class is also helping me to become a thinker. I am gaining the ability to analyze and think critically through the material we read and discuss in class. The assignments are helping me to become better in Language Arts, which has always been a hard class for me.
