By Emmanuel Adomako

Lancaster Bible College Intern

With Christian Endeavor Mid-Atlantic USA

Imagine together with your audience how in Christ we are not overcome. Watch the video and consider the lyrics of Mandisa’s song titled “Overcomer”

Staring at a stop sign

Watching people drive by
T Mac on the radio
Got so much on your mind
Nothing's really going right
Looking for a ray of hope
Whatever it is you may be going through
I know He's not gonna let it get the best of you
[Chorus:]
You're an overcomer
Stay in the fight ‘til the final round
You're not going under
‘Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it's hopeless
That's when He reminds You
That you're an overcomer
You're an overcomer

Everybody's been down

Hit the bottom, hit the ground
Ooh, you're not alone
Just take a breath, don't forget
Hang on to His promises
He wants You to know

[Chorus]

The same Man, the Great I am
The one who overcame death
He's living inside of You
So just hold tight, fix your eyes
On the one who holds your life
There's nothing He can't do
He's telling you
(Take a breath, don't forget
Hang on to His promises)
[Chorus]
You're an overcomer
You're an overcomer
You're an overcomer
So don't quit, don't give in, you're an overcomer
Don't quit, don't give in, you're an overcomer
Don't quit, don't give in, you're an overcomer
You're an overcomer

Now break into groups and reflect on the video and lyrics of Big Daddy Weave’s song titled “Overwhelmed” This is an integral part of our main devotion which obviously stems from (Psalm 61).Top of Form

I see the work of Your Hands
Galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming
I hear the sound of Your Voice
All at once it’s a gentle and thundering noise oh God
All that You are is so overwhelming
I delight myself in You
Captivated by Your beauty
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You

God, I run into Your arms

Unashamed because of mercy
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You
I know the power of Your Cross
Forgiven and free forever You’ll be my God
All that You’ve done is so overwhelming
I delight myself in You

In the Glory of Your Presence

I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by you
God, I run into your arms

Unashamed because of mercy

I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You

You are Beautiful, You are Beautiful
Oh God, there is no one more Beautiful
You are Beautiful, God you are the most Beautiful
You are Wonderful, You are Wonderful
Oh God, there is no one more Wonderful

You are Wonderful, God You are the most Wonderful

You are Glorious, You are Glorious
Oh God, there is no one more Glorious
You are Glorious, God you are the most Glorious
Leaders Tips & Questions / Discussion after watching and studying the lyrics of the above videos in the light of Psalm 61

Introduction: Begin the videos and then read the Biblical text, Psalm 61 from which we will derive the main theme. Explain the underlying themes in the videos so the students understand the big picture. Also explain how the main theme plays a role in the lyrics of the video from the text you just read.

Illustration: Illustrate the main theme.

Option 1: Use a personal or other story that illustrates the OVERWHELMED NOT OVERCOME.

Option 2: Use a situation or challenge facing your audience that has to do with the OVERWHELMED NOT OVERCOME.

Helpful Hints:

* Don’t assume the students can connect the story to the theme.

* Restate the main theme again for clarity, precision and assimilation.

* Do all you can to connect through the Bible, video, and story. Explain why and how this main theme is relevant to us, our life, family, and/or our church, etc.

* Explain how your audience can practically apply the main theme.

Small Group Questions:

1. Think of a time you or someone from your family felt overwhelmed. Form groups of four, if you are comfortable, please share your story.

2. Talk about the emotions you or your family member felt in this.

3. What steps will help you be calmer the next time you experience a potentially Overwhelming situation? 4. Imagine a close friend is feeling overwhelmed, what steps could you take to support your friend?

Closing Prayer:

Hold your hands together to form a chain. Take turns praying.
