Main Idea and Details Lesson-Grade 2

Objectives


  • Students will be able to identify the main idea of a story.

  • Students will be able to identify the details that support the main idea of the story.


Materials

Book-Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst

Cookie and chocolate chip pictures with labels (See attached)

Blank chocolate chip cookie pictures (See attached)

Chart paper or chalkboard

markers
Procedure



  • Ask students to explain main idea and details

  • Explain that students can use food to help them remember main idea and details

  • Show the clip art of the cookie labeled main idea; explain that the cookie represents the main idea or what the whole story is about

  • Place cookie on the board/chart paper and ask what could make the cookie even better (chocolate chips)

  • Show the labeled chocolate chips (details) and explain that just like chocolate chips make cookies even more enjoyable, details that support the main idea make the story more enjoyable

  • Tape a few chocolate chips on the cookie picture

  • Explain that as you read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, students need to be listening for the main idea and the details that support it

  • Read and discuss the book

  • After reading the story, draw a huge cookie on the board or chart paper.

  • Remind students that the cookie represents the main idea and the chocolate chips represent the details that support the main idea


  • Ask students to identify the main idea of the story and write it at the top of the cookie (Alexander has a bad day)

  • Ask students to identify details in the story that support the main idea; Write each detail on a separate chocolate chip and tape them to the cookie (Ex. Gum in his hair, Only found breakfast cereal in box, no dessert in lunch, dentist found cavity, etc.)

  • Review definitions of main idea and details and cookie=main idea and chocolate chips=details

  • Throughout year can refer to cookie lesson when talking about main idea and details
