After reading the story, draw a huge cookie on the board or chart paper.
Remind students that the cookie represents the main idea and the chocolate chips represent the details that support the main idea

Ask students to identify details in the story that support the main idea; Write each detail on a separate chocolate chip and tape them to the cookie (Ex. Gum in his hair, Only found breakfast cereal in box, no dessert in lunch, dentist found cavity, etc.)
