“Nacirema” Satire Assignment Sheet

Satire is a piece of writing that is written “tongue-in-cheek”. On the surface it seems sincere, but as you read more and more of that piece it becomes very apparent that the writing is intended to make fun of or show the weaknesses in human behavior. Horace Miner is making fun of the rituals or customs that we do all the times, but do not consider strange. Perhaps to an outsider these rituals do appear strange.
List the things that Miner is making fun of in American culture in your small groups.

How were these elements presented to you the reader? Was Miner successful in his attempt to disguise his intent? Why or why not?

Now that you have thought of the aspects of American culture that Miner thinks are strange, it is your turn to make a list of the aspects of Canadian culture that you think are funny, strange or weird. In your small groups, make a list of 10 traditions, customs or things that most people do on a regular basis that could be made fun of. Please be nice in your wording!
