1. TAYLOR SWIFT
"Love Story"

We were both young, when I first saw you.

I close my eyes and the flashback starts-

I'm standing there, on a balcony in summer air.

I see the lights; see the party, the ball gowns.

I see you make your way through the crowd-
You say hello, little did I know...

That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles-

And my daddy said "stay away from Juliet"-
And I was crying on the staircase-
begging you please don't go...
And I said...

Romeo take me somewhere, we can be alone.

I'll be waiting; all there's left to do is run.
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess,
It's a love story, baby, just say yes.

So I sneak out to the garden to see you.

We keep quiet, because we're dead if they knew-
So close your eyes... escape this town for a little while.
Oh, Oh.

Cause you were Romeo - I was a scarlet letter,

And my daddy said "stay away from Juliet" -
but you were everything to me-
I was begging you, please don't go-
And I said...

Romeo take me somewhere, we can be alone.

I'll be waiting; all there's left to do is run.
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess.
It's a love story, baby, just say yes-

Romeo save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel.

This love is difficult, but it's real.
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess.
It's a love story, baby, just say yes.
Oh, Oh.

I got tired of waiting.

Wondering if you were ever coming around.
My faith in you was fading-
When I met you on the outskirts of town.
And I said...

Romeo save me, I've been feeling so alone.

I keep waiting, for you but you never come.
Is this in my head, I don't know what to think-
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said...

Marry me Juliet, you'll never have to be alone.

I love you, and that's all I really know.
I talked to your dad -- go pick out a white dress
It's a love story, baby just say... yes.

Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh.

'cause we were both young when I first saw you

Although it is obvious why I chose this song, I do enjoy the happier interpretations offered by Swift. For instance, why doesn’t Lord Capulet/Daddy like Romeo? In Shakespeare’s version, it is because of the “ancient grudge” between “two households . . . both alike in dignity” (I.Prologue.1-3). Swift suggests the dislike has something to do with “throwing pebbles” (was it at her bedroom window at night?), or perhaps their fathers are mortal enemies who wrestled against each other in high school.  Honestly, it’s difficult to say. Both are ambiguous.
Having read the play now for many years with many students, I have to admit I like Swift’s final act more than Shakespeare’s -- well, at least for the time being. Swift’s voice demonstrates Juliet’s agony at laying her heart out in front of Romeo when she sings “Romeo save me, I've been feeling so alone. I keep waiting, for you but you never come.” Similarly, Shakespeare’s Juliet displays this emotion during Act II, Scene 2, admitting,

I should have been more strange, I must confess,

But that thou overheard’st, ere I was ware,

My true-love passion. Therefore pardon me [. . .]. (102-104)

But the goose bumps break out during the crescendo:
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said...
Marry me Juliet, you'll never have to be alone.
I love you, and that's all I really know.
I talked to your dad -- go pick out a white dress
It's a love story, baby just say... yes.

Yay! Someone finally broke the curse of the “star-crossed lovers.”

2. THE FRAY
"Over My Head (Cable Car)"

I never knew

I never knew that everything was falling through

That everyone I knew was waiting on a cue

To turn and run when all I needed was the truth
But that's how it's got to be
It's coming down to nothing more than apathy
I'd rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke and who's still standing when it clears

Everyone knows I'm in

Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Let's rearrange

I wish you were a stranger I could disengage
Just say that we agree and then never change
Soften a bit until we all just get along
But that's disregard
Find another friend and you discard
As you lose the argument in a cable car
Hanging above as the canyon comes between

Everyone knows I'm in

Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows I'm in

Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your ...

And suddenly I become a part of your past

I'm becoming the part that don't last
I'm losing you and its effortless
Without a sound we lose sight of the ground
In the throw around
Never thought that you wanted to bring it down
I won't let it go down till we torch it ourselves

And everyone knows I'm in

Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows

She's on your mind
Everyone knows I'm in over my head
I'm in over my head
I'm over my...

Everyone knows I'm in

Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind

She's on your mind

The Fray provides a Romeo for Swift’s Juliet. First of all, I simply love the piano, and that is why this song made the cut. But it just so happens that it also reminds me of Act V, Scene 3, after Romeo discovers his Juliet, dead upon a bier:

How oft when men are at the point of death

Have they been merry, which their keepers call

A lightening before death! O, how may I

Call this a lightening? O my love, my wife! (88-91)

Here, Romeo is distraught and desperate and most likely rethinking many impulsive decisions already made. I like that the friends in the song were “waiting on a cue” just like Shakespeare’s players, all refusing to tell Romeo to stop the madness in spite of how obvious it is that the forces of nature are working against them. “With eight seconds left in overtime,” Juliet is certainly on Romeo’s mind, and in that fleeting moment, Romeo’s ends his life, thinking it would be joyless to live without his beloved Juliet.

3. MUSE
"Supermassive Black Hole"

Oh baby don’t you know I suffer?

Oh baby can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretenses
How long before you let me go?

You set my soul alight

You set my soul alight

(You set my soul alight)

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the 'supermassive'

I thought I was a fool for no-one

Oh baby I'm a fool for you
You're the queen of the superficial
And how long before you tell the truth

You set my soul alight

You set my soul alight

(You set my soul alight)

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the 'supermassive'

Supermassive black hole

Supermassive black hole

Supermassive black hole

Glaciers melting in the dead of night

And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

Supermassive black hole

Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole

Simply stated, this song ROCKS! I love the alliteration (“And the superstars sucked into the supermassive”) and the spacey vibe which is reminiscent of the fact that Romeo and Juliet are coined “star-crossed lovers.” Matthew Bellamy sings, “You caught me under false pretenses -- How long before you let me go?” The false pretenses are the masks (masquerade ball) and the names (Capulet and Montague). The angst in his question demonstrates the blind love and impulse that drive Romeo’s behavior.

Juliet herself is not without flaw. She could definitely be the girl described as “the queen of the superficial” being asked “how long before you tell the truth.” She falls in love as soon as the first honey-dipped words fall from Romeo’s lips, so let’s face it -- she already likes what she sees. And what if she HAD told the truth? She might have had to live in exile, penniless and forgotten, but she could have had her Romeo, and her life.
But there is one thing that can be said about this “love,” and that is how hot and quickly it burns. The lines “You set my soul alight” and “Glaciers melting in the dead of night” lyrically capture the essence of Shakespeare. Ultimately, the supermassive black hole is Romeo and Juliet’s passion, destroying everything in its path including six lives and the reputation of the Prince and the Friar.

4. SNOW PATROL

"Chasing Cars"

We'll do it all

Everything
On our own

We don't need

Anything
Or anyone

If I lay here

If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don't quite know

How to say
How I feel

Those three words

Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here

If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told

Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

Let's waste time

Chasing cars
Around our heads

I need your grace

To remind me
To find my own

If I lay here

If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we're told

Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life

All that I am

All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where

Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here

If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
5. O.A.R. (OF A REVOLUTION)
"Love And Memories"

Lovely, you're always lovely

A vision
You were the one
Now I am stuck inside a memory
You forgot about our destiny
You buried me
Didn't you?
Didn't you?

Love me faster than the devil

Run me straight into the ground
Drowning deep inside your water
Drowning deep inside your sound

You're always floating

A vapor
That I couldn't see
Here I am stuck inside a yesterday
Everything has given way

You fell from me

Didn't you?
Didn't you?

Love me faster than the devil

Run me straight into the ground
Drowning deep inside your water
Drowning deep inside your sound
Love me faster than the devil
Run me straight into the ground
Drowning deep inside your water
Drown in love and memories

Maybe I am a crowded mind

I watch your eyes glaze over
Stared down at the floor
You were amazing to me
I was amazing to you
But here we go again

Didn't you

Love me faster than the devil
Run me straight into the ground
Drowning deep inside your water
Drowning deep inside your sound
Love me faster than the devil
Run me straight into the ground
Drowning deep inside your water
Drown in love and memories

6. Eisbrecher

"Ohne dich"

Ich verbrenne für dich

Ich kann nicht atmen ohne dich
Du vergibst weil du liebst
Ich falle für dich
Kann nicht mehr aufstehn ohne dich
Du verstehst weil du lebst

Was ist die Sonne ohne dein Licht

Was ist ein Bild ohne dein Gesicht
Ich hab das Leben verflucht
Allein zu leben versucht
Doch es geht nicht

Ohne dich kann ich nicht frei sein

Ohne dich endlos high sein
Ohne dich bin ich allein
Ohne dich kann ich nicht fliegen
Ohne dich endlos lieben
Ohne dich kann ich nicht sein

Ich erwache für dich

Ich kann nichts spürn ohne dich
Du befreist du verzeihst
Ich ertrinke in dir
Spür deinen Pulsschlag tief in mir
Du verstehst weil du lebst

Ich bete zu Gott dass es nie endet

Dass dein Feuer mich ewig blendet
Ich vermiss dich zähle jede Sekunde
Ohne deine Gnade geh ich zugrunde

I burn for you

I can't breath without you
You forgive because you love
I fall for you
I can no longer stand up without you
You understand because you love

What is the sun without your light

What is a picture without your face
I have cursed life
I have tried to live alone
But I can't

Without you I can't be free

Without you I can't be endlessly high
Without you I am alone
Without you I can't fly
Without you I can't endlessly love
Without you I cannot be

I awake for you

I can't feel anything without you
You liberate you forgive
I drown in you
I feel your heart beat deep in me
You understand because you love

I pray to God that this never ends

That your fire will dazzle me forever
I miss you, I count every second
Without your mercy I will go under

7. Cat Stevens

"The First Cut is the Deepest"

I would have given you all of my heart

But there's someone who's torn it apart
And he's taken just all that I have
But if you want I'll try to love again
Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know...

The first cut is the deepest

Baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
But when it comes to bein' lucky, he's cursed
When it comes to lovin' me, he's worst...

I still want you by my side

Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
And I'm sure gonna give you a try
If you want I'll try to love again, (try)
Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know...

OOHHH,
The first cut is the deepest

Baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
But when it comes to bein' lucky, he's cursed

But when it comes to lovin' me, he's worst...

I still want you by my side

Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
But I'm sure gonna give you a try
Cuz if you want I'll try to love again
(Try to love again, try to love again)
Baby, I'll try to love again but I know, OOHHH....

The first cut is the deepest

Baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
When it comes to bein' lucky, he's cursed
When it comes to lovin' me, he's worst

OOHHH, the first cut is the deepest

Baby I know (baby I know)
The first cut is the deepest
Try to love again...
