The Project:

Each of seven teams will be assigned one of the following critical lenses:


Team 1: “You'll never have a quiet world till you knock the patriotism out of the human race.”

Team 3: “Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons.” -Bertrand Russell

Methods:

Each team will put together a 10-minute presentation of choice during which it will do the following:
1. Briefly, describe the author of the quote.
2. Interpret and explain the quote. This must be MUCH more than merely paraphrasing the quote, or giving a surface level explanation. It should include a thorough explanation of the quote's meaning and its implications. This should be the bulk of your group’s presentation, and should include AT LEAST 6 SPECIFIC REFERENCES to the text. The text selected as references should be from Books 2, chapter 22 through Book 3, chapter 8. You should use your homework from the break to find good points of reference.
*If someone you would like in your group did not complete the break homework, he or she may not be included in your group’s presentation and will complete an alternate assignment.
3. Each team should clearly explain how and why each textual example was chosen and how it connects to its assigned quote.
4. Use the dictionary to define and explain the meaning of patriotism. Your group should also tie the theme of patriotism in our book to current national issues and your group’s feelings towards them. What is patriotism today? Is it different than it was during the French Revolution? Do you all agree on the definition of patriotism? Why or why not? What kinds of things do people die for currently, in the name of patriotism? Are they justifiable to your group? To what extent does the definition of patriotism differ for each individual?

These questions should be addressed throughout your thorough and complete presentation, not on a one-by-one basis. These projects should promote discussion, differentiating opinions and be a very mature and well-thought out demonstration of your ability to comprehend your reading and translate Dickens’ statements on this topic to our current times.

5. Your team will also cover the key plot events from its assigned chapters. Again, this should not be recap of Sparknotes, but a dissected analysis of the heart of our story. What is going on? Why? How do these characters feel? Why is it important? How does it all tie together? What literary devices does Dickens use? What do you like? What is confusing? How does Dickens involve the reader’s emotions? What choices are being made by the characters? Are these just? Why or why not? Again, do not answer these questions one by one, but in a summative and thorough presentation.
6. Submit a 1-2 page report that summarizes and reflects the team's presentation, with all selected textual evidence correctly cited and in proper MLA format. You should also include each group member’s break homework, as well as a Works Cited and Consulted page, listing each source your group used in creating your presentation.
7. You may use any kind of visual aid you want: PowerPoint, Flexcam, videos, homemade movies, posters, large sheets of paper, or anything else you feel makes sense for your presentation. Please, please, PLEASE, get creative. 
Additional Criteria:

You may not read from the screen when presenting. You may each hold an index card if needed, but your presentation should be so well prepared that it is a smooth conversation with the class, as opposed to a slide by slide reading of compiled information. Aside from posting a quote from the text, all other information on your slide should be in a brief bullet point. Each member should contribute equally and it should be evident that each member has thoroughly prepared and knows exactly what they are to discuss.

Deadlines:

You will be given class time on Monday and Wednesday April 20 & 22 to work with your groups.

Test on Book 2 on Tuesday, April 21.
All presentations will be given in class on Thursday and Friday, April 23 & 24. All group reports are due Thursday, April 23.

**Individuals who did not complete the break homework will complete this assignment alone, and will not present your findings to the class. You will lose the available presentation points for this assignment.
