National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2014

In 2008, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced in Australian schools. The program is scheduled to continue in 2014 with all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 to be assessed using common national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students in Tasmania have been participating in literacy and numeracy tests for a number of years, so there is familiarity with the test formats and the types of questions.

The scheduled dates for the tests in 2014 are Tuesday 13 May, Wednesday 14 May and Thursday 15 May.

These national tests will provide information on how students are progressing against national minimum standards of literacy and numeracy skills expected for each year level, as well as performance across the whole range of student abilities. The results will support improvements in teaching and learning for students.

Parents will receive an individual report that shows their child’s results and a comparison of their child’s performance against all other Australian students in their year level. The report will also indicate how their child performed in comparison to the national average and the levels of achievement expected at that year level.

For students in Years 5, 7 and 9, the results from the 2014 tests will provide parents and schools with important information on progress made since they last participated in NAPLAN testing in 2012.

The best way you can assist your child is by making them feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests, and assure them that the tests will give them an opportunity to show what they have learned in class.

SRC Cake Raffle
On Friday, 9th May at 10:50 a.m. the SRC will be conducting a cake raffle in the quadrangle. Tickets are 50c each and the cake will be made by SRC members. All money raised will go towards our World Vision child, Elvin Molinas. So please support this fundraising effort generously!

Scholastic Book Club Issue 3

Issue 3 of Book Club will be coming home with the newsletter this week. Please return any orders to the office by Wednesday 21st May in an envelope with your child’s name and the correct money.




BLACK AND WHITE DAY

Black and White Day will be on Friday, 16th May. Dress up in black and white clothes for a gold coin donation. Get your face painted for $1. All of the money that we get from black and white day will be donated to help research to save the Tasmanian Devil.

Primary School State Athletics Carnival
On the 17th of April, the last day of the term Tom Emmett and I represented our school and the Northwest Coast Team in the Primary School State Athletics carnival and we did an awesome job. It was cold in the morning and got warm in the afternoon. It rained for a couple of minutes at the end of the day.  There was a lot of people there, it felt a bit scary at first. Everyone got along well and we made some new friends.   We all had a great day. It was fun and exciting.

 

Tom was in the team relay, they came second for the Grade 4 boys 4x100m. Nice job boys!



Tom was very excited and pleased with himself and the team. In event 17, Heat 1, Tom came 6th. Good job.
I ran in the 1,500m and came 5th and in the 800m I came 4th. I was pleased with my times and the places, I felt so happy.  Like the song...”I feel happy”.

School Cross Country – Tuesday 20th May

All children will walk down to the start/ finish area from school at 12:50 p.m. with their class teacher.

The children will be running at the times below. Before and after their race children will need to stay in the seating area between the start and finish lines. Parents are welcome to watch at any point along the course.

Please make sure your child has a warm top, running shoes and extra drink on the day. We will pencil in Wednesday the 21st as our back up day in case of bad weather.

Games are on again from this Saturday, if you have misplaced your roster please come to the office for a spare one. Six-a-side competition is on the weekend of the 24th & 25th of May, we have only got one team playing in the competition and that is our Under 12’s.

A reminder that Latrobe Demons Basketball Primary School Roster commences Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th May. Mondays are Grade 4, 5 and 6 Boys, Grade 1, 2 and 3 Girls and 4, 5 and 6 Girls. Tuesdays are Grade 1, 2 and 3 Boys. The registration for this roster is $60 for Grades 1 – 5 and $80 for Grade 6. The roster will be supervised by Marquis Navarre, the Senior Men’s Import.
