Keepers
Prompt: In the story, Keepers, how does Kenyon show that he is a good grandson?

In the text, “Keepers,” by Jeri Watts, Kenyon is a good grandson because he listens to his grandmother, obeys her, and even though he spends his money poorly, he still finds a way to give her a heart-felt gift.

First, Kenyon is a good grandson because he listens to and obeys his grandmother, Little Dolly, without question. In the text, Little Dolly catches him sneaking out to play baseball and demands, “Did you finish your homework?” Kenyon responds, “mostly finished, Little Dolly,” but that isn’t good enough for Little Dolly. When she starts to rant about him not finishing his work, Kenyon say, “I’ll finish,” sacrificing playing baseball with his friends to obey his grandma. I think this shows that Kenyon is a good grandson because he immediately does what his grandmother wants him to do: finish his homework. This is a respectful decision. Kenyon knows that by staying home he will miss his baseball game, but Little Dolly’s wishes take priority over his own so he does his homework, making him a respectful grandson.

Another reason that Kenyon is such a good grandson is that he gives his grandmother a gift he thought of and made himself even after he spent his money poorly. In the text, it is Little Dolly’s 90th birthday, and Kenyon heads around town, “going in and out of shops talking of ideas for Little Dolly with the shopkeepers.” However, he ends up buying a leather baseball glove for himself instead of a birthday gift. Then, “while heading home he remembers Little Dolly” and feels as though he can’t breathe because he feels so ashamed. Later, when Kenyon is moping in his room he thinks, “The stories! That’s it!” He then makes Little Dolly a book full of all of the stories she’s shared with him from her past. She is so touched by the personal gift, she cries when she sees it. This makes me think that Kenyon is a good grandson because even after he makes a selfish choice with his money by buying something for himself instead of for Little Dolly, he knows he made a mistake and fixes it. Kenyon connects with his grandmother by showing her that he treasures her stories, letting her know how important she is to him, and making Kenyon a good grandson.
It is clear that in the story, “Keepers,” by Watts, Kenyon is a good grandson because he obeys his grandmother and he gives her a birthday gift that shows how much he loves and appreciates Little Dolly.
