This story is a cute little mystery about an adventurous slug. The illustrations are very realistic. It is conducive to teaching children a variety of strategies including, but not limited to, Question and Topic/Main Idea and Supporting Details.




Before Reading:
Prepare


Relate a personal experience with slugs.

Once when I was a child, I was outside playing. The moon was full, and it was a beautiful night. In the distance, I could see something shimmering in the moonlight. I made it to the shimmering object. It was a trail that I thought must have been made by something magical. I followed the trail and imagine my surprise when it led to a___________ (let the students guess at this point to build anticipation) sticky, slimy, slug.

Activate prior knowledge. How many of you have ever seen a slug? What did you think about them?

The title of the book I am going to read to you today is Some Smug Slug. What does smug mean? It means to be arrogant or a “know it all.”

What do you think the topic of this story will be? Remember the topic is what a story is about. The main idea is what the story is mostly about.

Read to page 5 in book, and then ask, “What do you think the main idea will be?”

This book definitely reminded me of my little incident with the magic trail. While I am reading to you, I want you to use one of our reading strategies, questioning.

Make sure to ask yourself questions that can be answered while I am reading or after I finish reading. The questions you ask yourself should help you better understand what is being read.


During Reading:

After “Stop,” screamed the sparrow.

What question(s) are you asking yourself at this point in the book? Why is the sparrow yelling, “Stop.” ?

What detail or details have we read that would support the main idea ? We thought the main idea was about a smug slug and all the illustrations show the slug. The author is describing the slug.
After “So Sad,” squealed a stink bug.

What question(s) are you asking yourself at this point in the book? Why is everyone being mean to the slug? Why do they keep yelling at him? Why doesn’t the slug stop?

What detail or details have we read so far would support the main idea? The slug just keeps on going, and he isn’t stopping for anyone. He isn’t listening.

Turn to next page and read. Ask students to predict what they think the animal is.

What question(s) are you asking yourself now? Is he going to live or be eaten?

Who can tell me the topic and main idea of this story ?

Remember that the topic is what the story is about. The topic is a slug. The main idea is what part of that topic (the slug) the story is mainly about. It is mainly about how the slug is smug. What details did we encounter in this story to support the main idea? He thought he knew where he was going. He didn’t listen to anyone. He just did what he wanted.





Vocabulary Lesson

There is something really different about the words in this story. Let me read this page to you and you tell me if you know what it is. Read page 4 and 5.

Most of the words start with the same letter sound. This is called alliteration. It is when an author uses words that begin with the same sound or letter. It is like a tongue twister. It makes the text or words more interesting and fun to say. Who can help me list the words that begin with that letter sound. Today we will see if we can find some other authors who also use this technique.
