1. Goal and tasks of the programme, results of studies
Goal of the programme:

- in conformity with the profession standard to train interior designers, whose knowledge is based on the theory of art, architecture, interior design and other relevant spheres, developing their basic professional skills in cooperation with employers, to teach the interior designers who are proficient in planning and creation of functional and high-quality esthetical space environment and are oriented to continuing education.

In order to achieve the goal the following tasks were defined:

  • to ensure acquisition of knowledge and skills of fine arts, entrepreneurship, information technologies, personnel management, communication, interior designing, arrangement, ergonomics and other, which are substantial for the specialty of designer, as well as practical work experience, which is necessary for development and realisation of personal education conception;


  • to favour development of the intelligent personality, capable of self-expressing artistically, emotionally and intellectually;

  • to develop abilities to understand art, architecture and design value criteria in the culture historical, political, economic, technical, ethnical, aesthetical and social context;

  • to develop analytically critical thinking and research skills: investigation, analysis and interpretation of theoretical opinions and fact materials related to the specialty;

  • to prepare future designers for active, independent and creative work for solving culture environment issues;

  • to develop students’ planning, organisation and cooperation skills; to provide continuous mutual integration of theoretical knowledge and practice, as well as mutual integration of separate study subjects.

Strategy of studies. During the study process it is necessary to ensure:

  • pedagogically professional movement for attaining of the aim of every study course;

  • mutual course integration in development of designer’s professional skills;

  • students’ joint responsibility for their education quality;

  • training related to professional activity, students’ personal development and life-long learning.

Planned results:

  • professional degree of Bachelor of Art;

  • the 5th level professional qualification “Interior designer”.


2. Organisation of the programme

The Director of the programme organises and manages the study programme. The programme is realised at the Home Culture Education Department of the Faculty of Pedagogy, RHEI. The studies are organised as full-time and part-time studies.

2.1. Correspondence of the plan of studies to goals and tasks of RHEI
The necessity of the programme establishment is grounded on the present level of science development, social demand and regulations of the Ministry of Education and Science (Education classification, etc.).

The need in this programme is dictated by the interest and wish of secondary school, secondary professional school and college graduates to obtain the Bachelor’s professional degree in interior design in Latgale. The study programme “Interior design” is foreseen for preparation of qualified specialists for needs of Latgale region and Latvia, which is defined by:

- Regulation no. 481 (November 20, 2001) of the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia “Regulation on the state standard for the second level professional higher education”;

- economic and social conditions of the region;

- National Development Plan, which foresees that education, entrepreneurship, research, competition in education and adult education must become the basis for life quality.

The programme was developed in correspondence with the Law on Education, the Law on Institutions of Higher Education, RHEI Development Strategy, RHEI Constitution, and the Standard for the interior designer profession.


2.2. Work of the programme internal quality mechanism

In RHEI there is a successful system of quality management and evaluation applied to the quality of studies. The system of studies quality evaluation covers all work spheres of RHEI and its departments. The procedure of quality evaluation includes RHEI studies policy, correspondence of study programmes to the Law on Institutions of Higher Education, regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers and other higher regulations and informative documents.

The goal of the quality of studies at RHEI is to ensure planning and application of RHEI resources (academic personnel, infrastructure, finances) in order to develop realisation of competitive education, including life-long learning.

In the context of the study programme “Interior design” the most important study quality mechanism sphere is the quality of the study programme, where the most significant indicators are:


    • Clarity, attainability of goals and tasks of study programmes, their conformity with the development strategy of RHEI.

    • Conformity of the study content with standards for the Latvian education and professions, other legislation, EU flexibility and variety of study programmes in development.

    • Observation of democracy principles in management of the study programme and in students’ and academic personnel’ relations.

    • Methodological (programmes of study courses, calendars and thematic plans), information and materially technical provision of the study programme.

    • Annual self-evaluation of study programmes, discussion of weaknesses and strengths, changes, possibilities and plans of development, perfection of programmes.

    • Study programme director’s contribution to management of the study programme.

For perfection of the study quality and work efficiency a range of activities is performed for improvement of organisation of the study process, for lecturers’ and students’ cooperation in scientific work, for efficiency of students’ individual work, etc. With the aim to improve quality of the study process within obligatory and specialisation courses of the interior design study programme students’ study works and individual works are examined – tested once a month, when students’ achievements and imperfections in their works are analysed and evaluated. The best works are used for expositions at the department and the most creative students are offered a possibility to exhibit their works at RHEI and outside the institution, thus facilitating students’ learning and creating activities.

Last years the environment of studies has been improved, students of the interior design programme are studying in qualitatively repaired premises; the new RHEI Information Technology Centre improves the process of learning computer technologies.

3. Structure of the study programme
The study programme was developed in according to the 5th level professional higher education profession standard “Interior designer”.

The content of the study programme includes general, field theoretical and professional specialisation courses, free choice courses and practice. Creative and research work is included in the content of separate study courses, practice assignments, study projects and development of the diploma thesis project (methodological recommendations for development of the diploma thesis project are at the Home Culture Education Department).

Special attention is paid to new information technologies.

Practice perfections professional workmanship; during the practice at enterprises and institutions students strengthen their theoretical knowledge. The practice is regulated by the Provision of practice of Rezekne Higher Education Institution (see http://staff.ru.lv/Senāts/Nolikumi) and methodological recommendations of the Home Culture Education Department about practice (see Annex 8).

General, field theoretical and professional specialisation courses are obligatory for all students. As a result of studying the theoretical and professional specialisation courses students obtain knowledge in drawing, composition, coloristics, interior styles, information technologies, interior planning and ergonomics, which are necessary for qualification of interior designer. These study courses are taught in a deepened way both theoretically and practically, thus ensuring emergence of necessary skills and abilities for development of design projects and necessary skills for entering the modern labour market according to its demands.

The programmes of study courses and study plans (see Annex 5) were developed taking into account RHEI Guidelines on development of study course programme.

Short programmes of study courses can be seen in Annex 7.

The professional study programme “Interior design” provides the 2nd level professional Bachelor’s higher education, theoretical and practical training, which gives a possibility to plan and realise creative ideas in the sphere of interior design, to fulfil orders in interior design, project development and author supervising. The interior designer can initiate individual business, organise and manage other specialists’ work in cooperation with architects, artists, computer designers, as well as work at various enterprises and offices.
