INTRODUCTION
Planning a Role Play Area
1. Draw up a list of the different activities which children might carry out in the role play area.

2. Analyse the learning potential of the activities in terms of the skills, concepts, attitudes and knowledge. Add the statements of attainment to your long term, short term and weekly plans.

3. Devise extension activities in appropriate areas of the curriculum, developing out of the role play.
Consider:

  • discussions, suggestions from the children based on their existing knowledge;

  • use of stories, books, slides, film strips, T.V. programmes to extend knowledge;

  • a visit if possible;

  • resources needed:-

    • those which are available

    • those which need making

    • those which need to be borrowed
  • Involving colleagues, parents etc. in gathering resources. If appropriate see about borrowing certain items from the museum, or from a real shop, clinic, post office etc;

  • the location - design the layout for the space available.

  • building the role play area with the children - add items to extend and develop play gradually, discussing each addition with the children and encouraging them to think carefully about how each item might be used.
