SEPTEMBER 2010 A Note from your President : Dear Sisters:
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice long hot summer! I was very fortunate to be able to attend my first AOH/LAOH National Convention in July in Cincinnati, OH. It was a great experience and I met many LAOH sisters from all across the country. The highlight of the convention was when Maureen Shelton won the National Vice President office and she also received the National President’s Leadership Recognition Award. It was a great convention for Maureen and for Michigan!
In keeping with historic agreement reached at the National Convention regarding unity among the men and women of the AOH it is my pleasure to announce that the Michigan State Boards of the AOH and LAOH have agreed to have a joint state convention next year. The dates are set for May 20th and 21st at the American Spirit Centre in Brighton Michigan. The AOH Kelly Division and the LAOH Sarah Regan Division will be hosting the convention, with help from the LAOH State Board. More information will follow soon.
I urge all those sisters who have not received their degrees as of yet to do so on the 18th of September. I have observed the degree ceremony three times now, with the last time at the National Convention by the Ohio Degree Team and I must say it is a beautiful ceremony. When observing you see and hear things that you might not have picked up while taking your degrees. See the notice in the newsletter to sign up.
I would like to thank the AOH Stephen Walsh Division for all their hard work on the picnic and golf outing last month. If you missed either event, you missed a great time!
This month our Charity is to help a family from St. John Bosco Parish in Redford who is in dire need of our help. Please see the newsletter for what they need and whatever you can do to contribute is greatly appreciated.
On a sad note, as you probably all know, please keep Joann Kelly and Terry Allen in your prayers. Joann’s son Patrick and Terry’s husband Doyle, passed away on August 30th. We will be using the Rosary Chain with arrangements since some of you will be receiving this after the fact.
See you at the meeting! – if you have any questions or comments please feel free to call me
There is a very needy family from my parish, St. John Bosco; Mom, Dad and a 12 yr. old girl. Dad has not worked in several years, and Mom has a minimum wage paying job. They are struggling month to month, worrying that they will lose their house and of course there are no extras for the girl who is starting middle school in September. They need any and all types of grocery items (non perishable); household products, and perhaps some things to make the girl feel special. She wears a girl’s size 14.

The Degrees are a dramatic, colorful, and informative exemplification of the motto of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians in song and story. Drawing upon the past History and the contributions made to the adopted homeland of our ancestors, the United States of America, the Degrees focus on our motto FRIENDSHIP, UNITY AND CHRISTIAN CHARITY, and its meaning in modern times. The Degrees are a symbolic presentation, utilizing references from our Celtic past, so that the members will easily understand and long remember, who we are and the good work done by the Order. The overall tone of the Degrees and their conclusion encourage the candidates to emulate the time and talent of their sisters, those present and those gone before, to maintain the high standing of the Order and continue its good works for faith and motherland The Degrees also emphasize that although we recognize that we hold a special place in promoting our faith, history, music, language, dance, songs and stories we are NOT just another Irish/American club. We sisters are the keepers of the Culture, Faith and Traditions that have been handed down to us to protect. This is a responsibility we take quite seriously.
