This year Cúrsa Cuimhneacháin Shéamuis de Faoite reaches a major milestone with the 21st. course in consecutive years due to commence on Monday July 20th. 2009 and special events are scheduled to take place:
Oscailt Oifigiúil / Opening 20th July
This year there are added attractions with the attendance of Críostóir Ó Cuana newly elected Uachtaran of CLG for the opening ceremony on July 20th. The legendary Paddy Mc Flynn now in his 91st year is also scheduled to attend as a special guest. Máire Bean de Faoite will also attend various functions during the course which is now dedicated to her late husband Séamus de Faoite the opening will conclude with an interdenominational Blessing by Fr. Charlie Byrne PP and Rev. Brian Smeaton.
The Rising Step / Ardú na Céime
Comhairle Uladh have arranged a special treat in this year with a scheduled visit to “An Grianán” in Letterkenny for the performance of “The Rising Step” on Thursday 23rd. July. The Rising Step brings you on a journey through the story of Irish dance from the time when the dance master visited homes to teach the steps, to the joyous dancing at the crossroads, and right up to the present day. Michael Patrick Gallagher who was principal dancer with Riverdance leads a cast of dancers, musicians and singers and a narrator in telling his story. Course members in 1990 were enthralled by dancing performance of the Gallagher family from the local area who had become world champions even at that stage. The family was later to gain world wide recognition with contributions to “Riverdance” and in allied performances.
Léachtaí / lectures
A number of special lectures and talks are scheduled for this anniversary year including “The de Faoite” lecture given by Donal Mc Anallen from The O’Fiaich Library in Armagh, Aogan Farrell Vice-President of Comhairle Uladh and Tom Cullenwho has been associated with the course from the beginning.
