Grade 8 Scale Score Results by Free/Reduced-Price School Lunch Eligibility

 In 2009, students in Massachusetts eligible for free/reduced-price lunch had an average reading scale score of 254. This was lower than that of students in Massachusetts not eligible for this program (282).

 In 2009, students in Massachusetts who were eligible for free/reduced-price school lunch had an average score that was lower than that of students who were not eligible for free/reduced-price school lunch by 27 points. In 1998, the average score for students in Massachusetts who were eligible for free/reduced-price

school lunch was lower than the score of those not eligible by 29 points.

 Students in Massachusetts eligible for free/reduced-price lunch had an average scale score (254) in 2009 that was higher than that of students in the nation who were eligible (249).

 In Massachusetts, students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch had an average reading scale score in 2009 that was higher than that of eligible students in 1998, but not significantly different from that of eligible students in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007.

Grade 8 Achievement-Level Results by Free/Reduced-Price School Lunch Eligibility

 In Massachusetts, 20 percent of students who were eligible for free/reduced-price lunch and 52 percent of those who were not eligible for this program performed at or above Proficient in 2009. These percentages were significantly different from one another.

 For students in Massachusetts in 2009 who were eligible for free/reduced-price lunch, the percentage at or above Proficient (20 percent) was not significantly different from the corresponding percentage for their counterparts around the nation (16 percent).

 In Massachusetts, the percentage of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch who performed at or above


Proficient for 2009 was not significantly different from the corresponding percentages for 1998, 2002, 2003,

2005, and 2007.
