Story telling through Indian Dance - Key Stage One



Objectives


  • To introduce pupils to dance inspired by another culture (India).

  • To perform a whole class dance with a narrative.

  • To work safely and co-operatively with a partner and in small groups.




  • To compose simple movement appropriate to the theme/ narrative.




  • To look at movement and describe actions.

  • To develop confidence and control.


Possible Tasks


  • Harvest dance - see attached Unit of Work.




  • Show pupils : "The King and the Deer" story extract from "Dance, Dance Wherever You May Be" - An Introduction to Indian Dance in Education": S. Dutta and B. Sarker

Discuss mudras and storyline.




  • Watch a "Chapati Dance" performed by pupils on "Teaching Dance in the Primary School": NDTA 1998.

Create your own version with your class.




  • Look at "Shore line" card within TOP DANCE programme.




  • Use photographs and pictures as a starting point.
