ESCUELA OFICIAL DE SAN SEBASTIÁN DE LA GOMERA
CURSO 2016 / 17
The art of storytelling is a characteristic of indigenous people throughout the world. Islanders, and those fortunate to be away from the mainstream of society, have used storytelling as a teaching and entertaining tool since the dawn of time.
The inhabitants of the Canary islands and La Gomera in particular have a unique tradition of storytelling from the time man first stepped foot here way back in the mists of time. As the hunter/gatherers sat around their fires in caves the older folk recounted stories of the lives of their ancestors, their great battles against the serpents of the seas and forests, the bravery of their leaders against the common foe, the invading pirates from the west of Africa, the Vikings, and lastly, the armies from Europe and the Peninsula.
Our students are the new generation of storytellers who will surprise, delight, and entertain their peers, parents and interested parties for generations to come.

PEOPLE ONLY VALUE THINGS WHEN THEY ARE LOST

Once upon a time in Italia, there was a man called Geppetto who made a wooden puppet. He carved the wood with the aspect of a child.
- “ I will call you Pinocchio”, said Geppetto. “ And I will be your father”.
To his surprise, Pinocchio came to life! He stuck out his tongue at Geppetto and put on his wig. When Geppetto finished carving Pinocchio, he escaped!
- “ Stop,” asked Geppetto.
Pinocchio continued running
- “Do not be mischievous, Pinocchio”, advised a nearby Cricket, -“You will regret it!
Tired and hungry, Pinocchio finally returned home. The next morning, Geppetto made clothes, shoes and a hat for Pinocchio.
- “You will need them for school”. He told him.
Although Pinocchio did not want to go, he went to school. The Jiminy Cricket followed him. Pinocchio saw puppets show along the way. He joined with the other puppets and had a lot of fun! The owner of the puppets even pains him five gold coins. Later that day, Pinocchio found a fox and a cat. He told them all about his gold coins.
- “Bury your coins tonight”, they told him, “In the morning you will be rich!”.
Pinocchio thought it was a fantastic idea, but he heard a voice coming from a tree.
- “Do not believe them”, The Jiminy cricket warned.
But Pinocchio wanted to be rich and he ignored the warnings. The Jiminy cricket disappeared and suddenly two thieves appeared. Pinocchio refused to give over his coins, even when the thieves hung him upside down on a tree. Poor Pinocchio stayed in the tree for the rest of the night, with his wooden legs sore. The next morning, a friendly blue-haired fairy met Pinocchio and saved him. He told her how the thieves had tried to steal his coins.
- “Where are your coins now?”, Asked the fairy.
Although he carried them in his pocket, Pinocchio answered:
- “ I have lost them” Suddenly, his nose began to grow!
- “Where did you lose them?”, asked the fairy.
- “In the forest”, Pinocchio said
His nose kept growing. Suddenly, his nose was so long that he could not move without is crashing into something! The fairy laughed.
- “When you lie, your nose grows, Pinocchio” A woodpecker had to prick his nose until it returned to its normal size.
One day, a dove called him from the sky.
- “ Pinocchio! Geppetto has gone to the sea to look for you”
How he missed his father! Pinocchio went up on the dove and this one took him flying to the sea, where a storm had made his father wreck. Poor Geppetto.
Pinocchio, who was a good swimmer, plunged into the sea to try to rescue his father, but Geppetto disappeared under the waves.
- “I hope he has not eaten a giant shark that lives in the sea”, said a dolphin. Pinocchio cried, thinking that he had lost Geppetto forever.
Sadly. Pinocchio swan toward the beach. It was then that he saw a dog splashing in the water.
- “ I don´t know how to swim!”, the frightened dog barked.
Pinocchio quickly saves him.
Later, Pinocchio got caught in the fishing net!
- “I caught a very big fish for dinner”, said one fisherman.
Holding Pinocchio on top of a boiling pot.
- “Help me,” Pinocchio said.
The dog returned the favour for his good deed and came to rescue him. Pinocchio was so grateful that he decided to be good and go to school.
But the next day, a child told him about the Toyland. He forgot about going to school, everyone was playing all day and night.
- “Iiii – aaah!” Pinocchio said one morning, for his ears had grown like an ass.
Besides, the rest of his body was also turning into a donkey! All the children had become donkeys as punishment for not going to school. The headmaster of a circus taught a lot of tricks to Pinocchio, but he treated very badly the little donkey.
- “Iiii – aah!”, brayed Pinocchio.
One day, the boss dragged the little donkey to the beach and pushed him into the sea, but he didn´t know that Pinocchio could swim. Pinocchio turned again into a wooden puppet and walked away swimming. Just then, a huge creature came out of the water, the giant shark!
Pinocchio began to swim with all might, but the shark soon caught up with him and swallowed him in one gulp. Pinocchio found a surprise inside the shark. It was.. Geppetto! Pinocchio ran to embrace his father.
- “Let´s go swimming together, Dad”.
- “I don´t know how to swim”, Geppetto sighed.
- “I do”, Pinocchio said. “Are you ready Dad?”, “Jumps”.
With Geppetto behind him, Pinocchio jumped out of the shark´s mouth and feel into the sea. The shore was far away, so Pinocchio was grateful that a friendly fish offered to take them.
Once home, Pinocchio found himself again with the Jiminy Cricket.
- “I´ll be good from now on”, Pinocchio fulfilled his promise. “And I will go to school every day”
One night, the friendly fairy said:
- “You are a good boy, Pinocchio. You´ll have a surprise tomorrow!”
When he woke up, Pinocchio felt different. Instead of a puppet made of wood, it was a real child!
- “Dad, look at me!”, he exclaimed.
“The fairy has made you a real child”, Geppetto said proudly.
- “I was a funny puppet”, Pinocchio said, “But now I am the happiest child in the world”
Morale of the fable
If you are bad, bad things happen to you and you are punished, however, if you are good, others will help you and reward you.
