In view…
(i) of the major social responsibility assumed by licensed firearm owners and the important questions of safety and public interest entailed by the police licensing of firearm owners;

(ii) of a number of recent tragic cases in which licensed firearms owners have used licensed firearms to threaten, injure or kill, and;

(iii) of the recent (2015) HMIC Report, Targeting the Risk examining the ‘efficiency and effectiveness of firearms licensing in police forces in England and Wales’
Accordingly, I should like to ask:
1. How many firearm enabled offences were committed by firearm licence-holders in your police force area during the last calendar year (or relevant data collection year).

2. How many offences, in total, were recorded as committed by firearm licence-holders in your police force area during the last calendar year (or relevant data collection year).

3. How many offences against the Firearms Act (1968, as amended) were recorded as committed by firearm licence-holders in your police force area during the last calendar year (or relevant data-collection year).

I am asking only for anonymous aggregated data totals relating to questions 1, 2 and 3. I am not seeking details of any particular offences or relating to any individuals.

SECTION 12

I am very interested in the case of the Metal Detecting Nighthawks (https://heritage.suffolk.gov.uk/hbsmr-web/record.aspx?UID=MSF24178-Group-of-illicitly-detected-finds-from-Suffolk-Norfolk-mainly-Saxon-detected-by-%27The-Metal-Detecting-Nighthawks%27-and-sold-for-5-00-(Sax)), but none of the Historic Environment Record, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, English Heritage or Suffolk Council Archaeological Service has been able to shed any light on the case.

I would be grateful if you could tell me: did it result in prosecution and, if so, did that result in any conviction?
**CLARIFICATION RECEIVED**
Thank you for your reply. I will try to be as specific as possible.
I do not know if there was a specific operation or if there were one or more investigations into the group that identified itself as Metal Detecting Nighthawks or into any of its members. I also do not know in which or in how many jurisdictions investigations have been carried out, since the members were spread across the UK. (For instance, according to other detectorists, the administrator was Welsh, though I do not know where he was resident or active during the group's existence.)
Obviously understandably but nonetheless unfortunately, the Facebook page is no longer accessible, so it is impossible for me to identify individual members or specific items. Still, the Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service's records did list one member as Karl Wood.

Also, the SCCAS's records listed a "group of illicitly detected finds from Suffolk & Norfolk, mainly Saxon, detected by 'The Metal Detecting Nighthawks' and sold for £5,000", which included a "gilded bronze (or silver) figurine of headed (female?) torso with arms held diagonally in front of body and with gilt skirt or 'sheath' over lower body", all of which had been "reported to the police, outcome unknown". May I enquire about the outcome of that case?

It would be very helpful to know if there have been other cases that involved the Metal Detecting Nighthawks. Is it possible to search for that group name? According to detectorists who checked the group, they were "proud of using their free time to plunder archeological sites in the night" and "show[ed] pictures of stolen finds of great rarity" (http://www.findmall.com/read.php?18,983643).
The SCCAS's records indicate that the Metal Detecting Nighthawks were active by March 2008 and the SCCAS's records were entered in October 2015, so perhaps the date range should be March 2008-October 2015. However, if the police investigations were concluded after October 2015, it would help to know what those conclusions were. I would not like to report that investigations were inconclusive because I did not know that the police had launched prosecutions or secured convictions since October 2015.
