Tess Gallagher Literary Archive

A Guide and Inventory

SPEC.RARE.CMS.184

This collection of the working archive of Tess Gallagher, which includes manuscripts, correspondence, books, serials, audio-visual media and other materials, was acquired by OSU in March 2001. There are also extensive manuscript holdings of Raymond Carver, Tess Gallagher’s husband, specifically, boxes 155A – 200, 203 and 208. Throughout this Guide “TG” refers to Tess Gallagher and “RC” to Raymond Carver. (For the Raymond Carver Literary Archive please see: http://library.osu.edu/finding-aids/rarebooks/carver.php )

Introduction

This collection includes over 30 years of the working archive of poet and short story writer Tess Gallagher. A substantial portion of the collection also includes late work by Raymond Carver, particularly his poetry. The Gallagher Archive is most important as a repository of primary materials of two important American writers. The archive also is a detailed record of the means and methods of literary publication with much information on the working relationships of writers with publishers, editors and other writers. Extensive business correspondence with numerous small presses offers great insight into the publishing world of literary magazines and journals. Personal correspondence with other writers is extensive: TG with Ciaran Carson, Donald Hall, Laura Jenson, etc. and RC with Russell Banks, Richard Ford, Tobias Wolff, etc. Box 176 contains materials associated with the film production of director Robert Altman’s Short Cuts, based on Raymond Carver short stories. The collection is particularly rich in audio-visual materials including films and videotapes, and, especially, many audio tapes of impromptu gatherings of writers and friends with particular attention to Raymond Carver
