“The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, is a very great story. But to my view, I think it is a sad story for Quasimodo and Esmeralda. Quasimodo’s foster father, Claude Frollo, was the Archdeacon of Notre Dame. He saw Esmeralda‘s dance and wanted Esmeralda to sleep with him. Of course, Esmeralda refused him. For revenge, Claude Frollo slandered her as a witch and called the solders to catch her for the death penalty. Both Claude Frollo and Esmeralda were all Quasimodo ever loved, I think his heart was broken.
For Esmeralda, at first she was only a public performer, but later she was slandered as a witch and a murderer. She was mostly abused and brutalized by Frollo and was seduced by Phoebus Chateaupers. At last, she was gibbeted too. It is so sad that these things happened to her.
I think the best part of this book is when Esmeralda stayed at Notre Dame, she saw Quasimodo’s gentle heart, and became friends with him. In this case, it suggests an idea: an ugly person shouldn’t be the subject of prejudice. If you get along with him for a while, you may find out he has a gentle heart. Mainly, it can be summarized into one sentence: “We shouldn’t judge people by appearances.”
I have thought up a new ending for this story. It is a happy ending for me: “At last, Quasimodo rescued Esmeralda from the hangman’s rope. Pierre Gringoire and Quasimodo caught the Archdeacon together. Gringoire reported the Archdeacon’s crimes to the highest judge of the court in Paris. He and Quasimodo stood witness to all of the Archdeacon’s crimes.
Finally, Claude Frollo was sent to jail, where he would be for his whole life.
Quasimodo got back his self-confidence. Esmeralda was still his good friend and she was still the wife of Pierre Gringoire.”
I think it is a good story for anyone. I hope everyone will expect this new ending.
