1. Who is the “you” addressed in paragraph 1? Why do you think this?

2. What type of revenge does Montresor seek? (name two qualities) What is the meaning of the phrase "A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser"? What does Montresor not want to happen when taking his revenge?  

3. Why did Montresor seek revenge on Fortunato? Do you think the insults really happened or not? Explain. How does not knowing make the horror of this crime even greater?

4. How did Montresor act towards Fortunato until the day he took revenge? Why?

5. How did Montresor know that the house would be empty?

6. In your own words, describe the catacombs that Fortunato is led through. How does this setting enhance the atmosphere of horror in the story? Would this story have been as effective if it was set at a different time or place? Explain.

7. Why does Montresor make sure Fortunato has drunk a lot of wine?

23. Discuss whether you believe insults or bullying could cause this degree of revenge today. What, in your opinion, could be done to prevent it?

1. Draw a picture or diagram of the deep crypt where Fortunato was walled up. (Your picture must be in color and at least normal paper size.)
2. Do research on European Carnivals (i.e. Italy and France) and write a mini-report on what it is like, what are the costumes like, what do they celebrate, when does it take place, etc.? Also include some pictures of what carnivals look like.
3. Write a sequel describing the discovery of the niche.
