The Pharisees and Their Questions

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Jesus told this story to the goody-goody people who looked down their noses at others.

“Two men went to God’s Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, the other a tax collector.”

This is how the Pharisee prayed:

“I thank you, God, that I’m not greedy, like other people. And I’m not a cheat-like that tax collector over there. I do all that your law commands. I even give you a tenth of all I earn.”

The tax collector hung his head; he was so ashamed of himself.

“O God, take pity on a sinner,” he said.

“I tell you,” Jesus said,” it was the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who was right with God when he went home. For everyone who makes himself out to be great will be made small. And everyone who thinks little of himself will be made great.”

Luke 10, 18:9-17
