The summary of the three stories☆


  • Summary

A group of Thai monks went the country called Sri Lankan to worship the Buddha foot print which is existed at there. Then Sri Lankan people said that 5 Buddha foot prints exist all over the world and they said that one of them is existed in Thailand where Suwannabanpot hill. After they came back to Thailand, they told king Songtham and king Songtham told commanders to search for the foot print. They started search, but they still couldn’t find it. One day, the hunter called Boon went to Suwannabanpot hill to hunt. Suddenly he would the deer and he shotted with his allow. He saw clearly that allow hit the deer and he thought that he got the deer. However, suddenly the deer had disappeared and deer stood and run away. Boon was confused. Therefore, he went to see the place where deer had disappeared. Then he found the big hole which was the Buddha foot print. In addition, there was the water which can treat injure or anything. Thus he went to see king and told king that he found the Buddha foot print. Boon found it in 1623 and Buddha foot print started worshiping by people and still today.

The story told about the why Thailand footprint became important and how people found it. Therefore, it is the Porquoi story.

When he found the footprint he went to see king and told that he found the Buddha footprint, therefore I think he is honest that he told give that he found it.



Problem/ Conflict

The problem in the story was that Thai people couldn’t find the Buddha foot print for long time. When Thai Buddhists went to Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Buddhists said that there is one Buddha footprint in Thailand. However, Thai people took long time to find the foot print.

Supernatural/Magic

There is one magic that when Boon shot the deer, deer fall down into the hole of Buddha foot print and there is water. If deer drink and touch the water, then injury from allow was treated. And also, when Boon went to drink the water, his skin disease was treated.

Moral Teaching

Tried to find something, finally you can find something that you want.

Historical References

Thai Buddhism

Thai people worship the footprint and they believe that it is important and kind of mystery. Thai people worship it in the recent time, too. Moreover, in Thailand, there is Buddha foot print which is one foot print from five all over the world, so I think Thailand is one of the largest populations to believe the Buddhism.

After Boon found the foot print, he went to see the king to tell that he found the Buddha foot print. From that I can said that Thai people thought that if people found the really important thing, they always tell the king first to show respect.

Suwannabanpot hill is the one of the hill in Thailand and today, people went to Saraburi province to worship the Buddha footprint



Thai History

Buddha foot print had found in 1623 and that time Thai Buddhists went to Sri Lanka to have a relation with others.



Story Comparison

In Japan there is very big and strong tree. The tree was worshiped by people because the tree was never broken even there are earthquake and typhoon in the past, so people think that it is special tree. Therefore the tree in Japan is kind of similar with the Buddha footprint in Thailand.

There was the man who was really poor. He had axe which was his father gave him. Therefore, he used it to cut the tree to earn the money with cutting the tree. One day he went to the forest and cut the tree as usual. Suddenly, his axe slipped from his hand and went into a river. He was really sad and disappointed that he lost his very important axe. However, suddenly the guardian who was Teypharak came out from the river. Guardian asked him that did he lose his axe, then guardian brought silver and gold axe for me, but poor man said that it is not his axe. Guardian was impressed how he was honest man and guardian gave silver, gold, and his axe. Therefore, poor man became comfortable enriched. When the incident, his brother who is very rich heard the story and he went to the forest to have gold and silver axe. He fall the axe intentionally. Suddenly guardian helped him to return his axe. Guardian came out with gold axe. Then he stole the gold axe and run away to brother’s house. Abruptly the axe became just a stick and he lost everything. Therefore, he has to ask his brother who was poor for help.

When the guardian asked him which axe did you fall into the river, then he answered honestly even guardian asked him that the golden and silver axe was his or not



Elder brother: mean

Even he is rich, he stole the golden axe and silver axe from the guardian.



Problem/ Conflict

  • The problem is that a poor man fall his axe into the river. Then guardian of the river came up and asked him which your axe is. Guardian gave the three choices to choose the axe.

  • His elder brother also went there intentionally and he stole golden axe from guardian. Then he got punished and his hand became stick.

Supernatural/Magic

Guardian used magic to come up from the river and created the golden axe and silver axe. Moreover, guardian used magic to turned golden and silver axe as just a stick.

Moral Teaching

Enough”

Elder brother was rich, but he wanted to have more money, so he stole the axes. From the story, it told that people need to understand enough and enough is really important in our society.

In the story there is Thai word”Teypharak.” The word means guardian in Thailand.

In the story, there is poor and rich. Therefore we can see that people Thai people have really serious separation between poor and rich.

I can guess that a poor man believe the Buddhism. In Buddhism people believe that if they are honest with themselves and do the good thing, then the good thing will return to them. Therefore, he was honest and did good thing and finally he could get gold and silver axe.



Story Comparison

The story of Woodcutter is similar with Phikul Thong. In the story of Phikul Thing the step-mother don’t understand the word enough meaning, so she send Mali to old woman to get golden flower to sell it. Therefore, I think the story kind of similar.

There was a king who named Prommathat ruled City of Benares. He tried to expand the land, so he tired to attack a king who named Tikiti ruled city of Kasi. However, a king Tikiti noticed that his army couldn’t beat the army of Prommathat, so he escaped with his queen from his city. The way of escaping the king Tikiti’s queen gave the birth to a baby who named Tikawukumarn. King Tikiti knew that if king Prommathat found out, then he will kill him and his wife and son, so he sent a son to his friends house which close to the city. Tikawukumarn grew up and be a smart man. One day, king Prommathat found out the king Tikiti and his queen, so he decided that he will kill him in front of the citizens. The day of execution, Tikawukumarn went to see his parents. Before king Tikiti have dead, he said “don’t do vengeance.” Therefore, he burned the quote of his brother into the heart. one day he play the music and king Prommathat heard the sweet music and Tikawukumarn became the favourite of the king. While they are going to journey, Tikawukumarn tried to kill the king Prommathat for his parents. He tried to kill the king for three times, but he couldn’t. Suddenly, the king noticed that Tikawukumarn tried to kill him, so he also tried to kill Tikawukumarn. However, Tikawukumarn explained that he stopped to kill the king because his father’s quote reminding me to stop to do it. Therefore, he didn’t’ kill the king. King also understood the Tikawukumarn and king thanks him to not killing him. Consequently, Tikawukumarn married with the king Prommathat’s daughter and got the happiness forever.

Even Tikawukumarn tried to kill him, but he accept the reason why Tikawukumarn tried to kill him and he also gave his daughter as Tikawukumarn’s wife, so I think he is kind.



Problem/ Conflict

  • King Prommathat tired to invade the land of city Kasi, so King Tikiti has to run away from the city because his city was smaller than the city of King Prommathat.

  • Tikawukumarn was the son of King Tikiti and King Prommathat did execution of King Tikiti in front of Tikawukumarn, so Tikawukumarn thought that he has to do the revenge.

There is no magic in the story.


Moral Teaching

Vengeance”

Even you are angry about something and really enmity with something, nobody can kill people and killing people never accept even they have reason for that.

Thai Buddhism

I can guess that Tikawukumarn believe the Buddhism. In Buddhism people believe that if they do the good thing, then the good thing will return to them. Therefore, he did good thing and finally he could get married and not killed by king. Moreover, the story is one of the Jataka stories which are Buddhism story, so the story is about Buddhism. And also the story teaches that enmity should be conquered by forgiveness.



Thai moral teaching

From the story, we can see that people always respect their parents and they follow what their parents said to them.



Thai monarchy

From the story, we can see that people think the king the best, but Tikawukumarn tried to kill the king, so after that Tikawukumarn was really apologize with what he have done. Therefore, we can see that the monarchy of Thailand.



Story Comparison

Tikawukumarn was similar with the story in Japan. One boy went to the store and tried to still snack from the store. Suddenly got appeared and don’t stole it, so he didn’t steal the snack. Therefore I think the story is really similar.
